Wtf

You buy a beautiful unibody aluminum Macbook and then put a cheap looking plastic casing around is so it looks like……..a cheap laptop from Fujitsu??????
I would rather have 10 scratches on the aluminum, than walking around with a case that makes my Mac look like a cheap knock-up.

As has been stated numerous times before, we are never compensated for our articles.

This particular quote is directly from my experiences working at an Apple Retail Store. Many, many college students bought shell cases of some sort (albeit, usually at the behest of their parents) to protect their MacBooks.

Just out of interest why was this chosen as 'news'?

Why it seems like a bit of an odd article to me:
-The negative side is not brought up (obvious -ve is the cost)
-2 links and only to the manufactures site, not a review or test/other new site.
-Not breaking the industry boundaries, in any way as a product.
-reads like a sales pitch
-no apparent 'Source' for picture

Vote me down all you want people but this isn't why I come to Macrumors.com, nor do I think this is a suitable article for the site, there is plenty of buying advice out there.

MacRumours could have a review section, where this kind of thing (in a little more depth could go), however I think this might also be unnecessary.

Edit: 1st Negative Vote, 2nd negative vote just in! 3rd yet no one explains...

Hmmm, these look nice. I might get one for my girlfriend's Air. It's a shame they don't offer a better selection of colours though.

Not sure why anyone buys these. MacBooks are designed as a huge HEATSINK. Their bodies dissipate heat. What happens when you trap that heat inside like a sleeping bag? You guessed it, it overheats/fails.

They look pretty yeah, but they don't do much beyond that. I work at a university and these things cause more problems and are not worth the cost. Cheap plastic with a high price. Yeah, no. Put it in a sleeve and call it a day.

Correct. I use a Belkin sleeve:
http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=375580
Available in different colors. Easy cleaning (wet or dry). Very robust. Available worldwide (not only in the U.K. or the U.S.). I've it since 2009. Provides good protection against dust, accidental damage and against a small amount of liquids (juice, a few raindrops and so on). It was not easy to find a high quality product for this price. WARNING: Do not buy Belkin cables! They are overpriced like Apple RAM.

Totally agree. Actually, I think one huge plus to the current aluminum bodies is they wear in very nicely. My girlfriend dropped her newish MBP and dented a corner, and you know what? I kind of think it looks cool. Like the way you can own an old Zippo lighter or something and it gets more character as it ages and you actually -- you know -- use it for real work.

Compare this with the old plastic macbooks, which just looked hideous after the initial polish was off them and they started to pick up unremovable grime around the palm rests.

Don't get me wrong, I still use a sleeve for my 11" Air and obviously keep the softer bits (ports, keyboard, trackpad, screen) protected, but a bit of wear on that aluminum is fine with me.

In fact, I hope the next iPhone has more metal on it so it can take some knocking around without going to hell.

Edit: 1st Negative Vote, does no one agree with me?

newflash: YOU don't run the site, nor do you get to decide what products are of interest to others and get covered. Thankfully.
Get your head out of your a**.
Some people are interested in this sort of case (including me) and enjoy reading about new released products

1st off I would like to thank you for my 2nd negitive vote.:D

Thanks also for reminding me that I don't run macrumors, easy to forget sometimes, phew!

I am not saying that this is not interesting to anyone, I am saying it is not macrumor article quality/suitable subject matter. You and others interested can and should read your standard sales pitches elsewhere.

Next time you take the decision to openly criticise without grounds or reason other than to go with the crowd/trend of the thread, read the post in question. You may need to read it more than once... This will often lead you to the conclusion that the person is not saying exactly what you think they are saying and thus will either A) change your mind or B) give you a better idea of what you arguing against.

next...

Edit: 1st Negative Vote, 2nd negative vote just in! (lets see how many of you out there want to read adverts on MacRumors.com...)

There's your third. If you don't like the article you don't need to read it. Interesting to note that you removed the fact that you're from Scotland in your particulars. Ashamed to troll under the banner of our nation?

----------

The Speck cases crack after light usage, which shouldn't happen for a 45 - 50.00 piece of expensive plastic!

This is absolutely true, I had one for two or three weeks and the back connecting hinges snapped clean off. I emailed Speck support and they were fairly nice about sending a new one out. I probably would look for something a lot sturdier in the future.

That said, I have one of their MacBook Pro cases and it's been perfectly fine.

Ashamed to troll under the banner of our nation?

You remember me?

There is a difference between trolling and raising (somewhat persistently I agree) a valid point (my point remains valid until someone explains to a greater degree otherwise)

Note: If you live in Scotland you are not necessarily Scottish.

Missing the point

I don't get the point in any of these cases.

I carry my laptop around in a neoprene sleeve inside of my bag... but when I take it out to use it I get and use it how it was made - without any silly cases!

----------

jlgolson is right :).

Whether they're buying it for style (too poor for ColorWare ;)) or protection I don't know, but these type of cases are dead common at Uni.

Half the university has base-spec 13" MBPs, and half of them have these silly cases on it.

I think too many people are missing the point on this product, yes its a piece of plastic and you do have to pay £25 + but you have to bare in mind retail margins that they have to make to keep there business going. Also would rather a £25 piece of plastic crack or scratch instead of nice hardware..!:)

Advantages

I have been using the "other slim cover" (Incipio) for two years now.
Doesn't slide off my lap. Cover cracked when I dropped it once but no damage to the MBA. With the cover off it still looks pristine and will get top dollar when I sell it. I have never had a problem with it overheating. My Moshi keyboard cover saved me from a spill last week as well.
This is a road warrior machine and a good cover helps protect your MBA from life. I would much rather have a case take a hit than spend hundreds getting my MBA fixed.
Who cares if it looks cool? Its a frigging computer, not a status symbol. The MBA lets me get my work done quickly and efficiently and its a OSX, Win7 and Linux machine all in one.
Now if I can just find a case for my RasberryPI ;)

Complete rip off for what is, at the end of the day, a lump of moulded plastic, one of the cheapest materials on the planet. Half the price and you may get a bit more interest, but at its current price its for fools.

how are they supposed to get rich w/o ripping you off by selling you crap you don't need?

do you hate America or something!!?!??

+1, no, +2

Had a Speck for a 15" that crack at the rear corners. Just last week had the same happen to my 11" Air. Same area.

Done w/ cases. Going w/ the Wrapsol skin this time to see how that is. Apparently they have a 30 day money back guarantee if you don't like it.

But man, the bare aluminum on a naked Mac laptop feels nice:)

I've had a Wrapsol on my 13 inch MBA for six months and love it! Protection that doesn't spoil the look of the notebook.

Its been 2 days now since I put on the Wrapsol for my 11". As w/ any of these wet skin installs, it was a PIA. Also, u freak about all that water u have to use and the air bubbles not coming out.

But after 2 days, everything has settled and it looks and feels gorgeous:)

So for the same price as the thin cases, I am getting a protection from scratches with the real look and feel of the Macbook Air!

Mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I know there are a lot of haters in this thread but I'll post my thoughts for those who care.

$55 and $60?

PEoQh.jpg

what are you thinking Moshi

Overpriced once again, classic by this company. classic failure

I just love how we are being sold protective cases made of polycarbonate, the same material that PowerBooks/iBooks/MacBooks have been made of for years. And the majority of the target market for these cases would thumb their nose at a plastic Mac portable if one were available side-by-side with an aluminum one.

...and peterjames nails it!

You speak The Truth (yet, admittedly I have my beloved Air11 in a neat matt-black case - matches my iPad better!)

LOL, reading this on an APPLE forum is hilarious. As if Apple products weren't overpriced....

Nice one!!!
