If you're shipping something very important and/or valuable, you could include an AirTag in the package for precision tracking.

Of course, this will depend on how many Apple devices are near your package at any given moment, and whether they're participating in the "Find My" network.

The Post Office already scans items into the system for dispersement and tracking. If someone wanted to include an AirTag with the shipment, it would require specific labeling by the shipper, and possibly at a greater cost to the customer.

I don't see this well-intended idea as very practical, especially at $29 a tag.

OK, I can't disagree. Didn't know you'd have to label your package if you included an AirTag.

I’m not sure where people are getting the idea that you can opt out of the Find My network. Disabling location services for Find My only disables it for your app. There is no ALWAYS permission for the app that would indicate you could opt out. Any iPhone with Bluetooth and GPS enabled will allow an AirTag to ping off of it. You’d have to disable Bluetooth to not participate in the Find My network.

The pic is the box the AirTags came in. The batteries have to also be shipped on specific planes with UPS and other carriers.

Yeah, I had the idea first. 🤣

Ok. Change of topic. Even though my dog is very unlikely to get loose and get lost, I attached an AirTag to my his collar just to be on the safe side. I've found it has two additional advantages/uses:

1. I don't have to search every room in the house to find him when he doesn't respond to my calling him (he's elderly and hard-of-hearing).

2. He tends to snap when startled awake. Now, if he doesn't hear me when I try to wake him, I can use the AirTag to beep him gently awake rather than touching him and potentially startling him, causing him to snap at me.

First world problems, first world solutions....
