Most of the films in this thread strike me as being sad as in moving, but for me one of the most depressing films I've seen is Lost in Translation. What a lonely, depressing story.

yea what a great movie, one of the best imho. the ending truly is shocking. the finale of this season of dexter is the only thing that i can remember that shocked me so much. they were very similar. on a lighter funnier side have you seen how se7en should have ended? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5gw7ec4KyY :D

I agree about the Dexter finale. So much sadness and frustration.

Another movie that gets me choked up near the end, Gladiator.

The boy in the striped pajamas

I forgot about that one. It was powerful like Sophie's Choice, or the English Patient (my vote for depressing/saddest). Someone mentioned the brilliant movie District 9, but at least the very highly advanced aliens (the alien kid and his father) will come back and turn the hero back into a human (I hope).
