No it's not a moot point. Stick the MBP on one of the lower-profile canted stands, if you're sitting in a car, or in any one of any other situations apart from sitting in front of it on a desk (and remember folks - it's a portable computer) and if you can honestly say that the position is ergonomically sound, then you must be Quasimodo, because I don't hunch that bad.

The D620/D630's angle is obviously overkill for everyday laptoping, but the M1330 is a darned sight better than the MBP, and is fairly normal among other laptops - for a good reason.

The Zalman cooler for example (which the Mac doesn't fit fully on widthwise but it's a good example of a low-profile fan-equipped stand) has a 40mm lift at the rear and 8mm at the front. I'm already hunching with this arrangement on a desk with the screen fully opened. So - thanks to the Macbook Pro's poorly engineered hinges before I was fanboily interrupted - it's going to have to be a flat stand which doesn't raise the rear of the machine up.

Can't find the Targus with my regular resellers - but it does look like the only thing worth looking for at this stage after everything else I've tried.

Hi!

I'm in a middle of a mess here.
Today I had the chance to actually see the much acclaimed iLap.
I honestly can't say it's worth that much money. It's simply a sheet of aluminum. with a good design. Doesnt seen any different from the koolsink model....
I've also considered the Zalman model, and the coolermaster models as well. Dunno were to turn, they all seen great, but the usage of an extra usb port seems too costly. The Mbp already has very few ports on its own...
As anyone tried the thermaltake iXoft?
Are there any "reliable" reviews online comparing these models?
Are there any other models I should be looking at?
Thanks!

The hinge doesn't seem like a big problem to me:

It's not exactly at eye-level, but I don't see how the hinge is a big problem on a rear-raised stand. Maybe you should take a break from hating on Apple?

I'd say its the latest model.
It has the built in camera, and already has the mag safe connection.
Thanks for your input wing70301!

I love my new macBook, and wouldn't trade it for anything. But, I too find the limited screen movement to be a hassle.

How do you think a combination of the Cooler Master and the Elevator would fare? Would the angle be too steep? Would it become too heavy?
I do like the idea of having air beneath the MBP for placing external HDs.

All MBP's have these.

MBP Rev B; about 8 months.

I thought as much. I'm going to have to call up one of the people I gave my pre-SR 15-inchers to and do a comparison. I wondered why my pre-SR 17" was annoying me less, and I should have lined them up sooner - because the pre-SR machine does open out more. Still not ideal as ever, but more usable than my 15" SR machines. I have a few more SR's in storage elsewhere as spares for work (and we've had to use a couple already - and thanks to Applecare's dire turnaround time of a week or more, I knew it was a good idea to invest in spares) and I opened them up, but all open to the same degree.

I may take a break from hating on Apple's engineering. It may just be their piss-poor QC, or some limitation imposed by the LED screen.

I sit in a bathtub full of ice while I use my MBP.

No laptop cooler has matched the temperature drop performance.

I have used the cooler master notepal...which is great but a solution that is not portable and very heavy...
the antec cooler was pretty good in cooling also but it elevates your notebook a little too much in my opinion so if you don/t have an external keyboard probably a no-go...as for the noise level of these to coolers I have to say you can hear them but no too much...i'd say the notepal by cooler master is a tad more silent than the antec cooler.

as for passive cooling stands I have the koolsink personal reviewfor my macbook and this one is pretty amazing...I was skeptical at first but it really does cool and is my favorite stand so far.

I also tested the xt-stand (personal review) which improves cooling a bit but not too much...

ok but tell me who the heck needs to tilt the display back MORE than the MBP? this is moot point if you ask me.

it is not a moot point. When i'm using my computer at lecture i place it on my lap and tilt the screen as far as it can go. at that point, very light colors (like grey) are nearly invisible due to the limitations of vertical viewing angles coming into play.

also need more angle if you're standing over your laptop thats sitting on a desk. I dont understand why powerbooks can tilt much farther than Macbook Pros.

i have the targus laptop chill pad too, this cooler is great, i can do almost anything on my laptop without it sounding like its going to take off :D, ands its cheap,

Can anyone that owns the Koolsink give me the dimensions so I can build my own?

I think it's ridiculous that they are charging $40.00 + $25 shipping for a piece of aluminum that I could bend myself.

here is a link with sizes
http://koolsink.com/koolsink-FAQ.htm#sizing

I too, think the koolsink is kind of expensive but after publishing my three reviews (in English, German and Japanese on a koolsink I received from a German distributor for a few weeks which I returned) the koolsink inventor offered me a koolsink at no charge...
otherwise I wouldn't have bought it I guess...shipping to Europe is very pricey and being a poor student doesn't help either:(
