As a long time smartphone and iPhone user I think the most impressive improvement is the 1 gb of RAM that is now available for programs. This is a huge improvement to the performance of the device. In addition to programs being snappier pages don't need to reload in Safari almost every time you switch tabs. Aside from being annoying this gobbled up data which is a concern for users that don't have unlimited data plans.
I also think LTE is a huge improvement over the 4S. Data speeds where I work are about 5 times as fast as AT&T's "4G".
And yeah, the screen is nice too.

Larger screen is much appreciated. I like that the phone didn't get wider. This was a concern when I heard of the size, but I have to say, I really like it!

It is the perfect compromise of screen size, phone size, and weight. Especially in the midst of a frenzy of enormous phones on the market. I didn't want a bigger screen, but the extra height makes calendar, websites, and other apps more useful, but the light weight and thinner design makes it feel like a smaller phone. Just don't make the screen any bigger going forward. That's what iPads are for.

I'm very impressed by the fact I have to toggle LTE 5-10 times a day and that it will drop all data intermittently while still showing being connected to LTE. Did I mention that LTE on this phone is fantastically bugged.
