How would I go about getting an iphone at the cheapest cost? I'm already on a family plan and not eligible for an upgrade yet. could I just open up a new line, and keep the existing 9.99 line till the contract is up?

I think that is your only option.

Does AT&T subsidize the termination fee by the number of months you have been in your contract? (i know verizon subtracts $5 for each month you were in it). If so that would be something to consider.

so $175 ETF (unless they subtract some) + 199 or 299 for the phone + 38 activation = $412 or 512 if you cancel the current line and get a new one

or if you keep the current line and get a new one
$9.99x(months left) + 199 or 299 + 38 = 237 or 337 + monthly fee (so say you have a year left on your contract that would be $357 or 457)

or if you keep the same line and just upgrade your phone
299 or 399 + 18 activation fee = $317 or 417

I'm pretty sure just getting the phone upgrade and renewing your contract would be the cheapest route...

Wow thank you for the help! the only thing that the phones cost $399 and $499, $100 more than what you stated. maybe I'll just stick with my current phone and get the new touch...
