So i was wondering whats the most popular Instant Messaging app IOS users use on their iPhones? I myself have been using Whatsapp for a long time and cant seem to find an IM which can go on par with it.

Feel free to comment :D

Umm iMessage ? Don’t need to install another app plus it’s not controlled by Facebook lol.
iMessage is good but its for IOS users only. And it isnt controlled by Facebook. In Indonesia most people use Android. So i have to use an IM which serves both IOS and Android.

WhatsApp for me, mainly because ALL my friends and family are on it.. I don’t love the Facebook angle but I do find the interface nice, replying to individual messages etc. is a lot smoother than it is with iMessage. But yeah, it’s still more through necessity than choice.

If someone has an iPhone then iMessage is best but unfortunately not everyone does. WhatsApp is nothing more than one of Facebook's data mining apps but just for general chat about baseball it's fine. If security is important than Signal is the only way to go. Other than that just whatever is convenient

I was planning to give Telegram a try. Im not that smart about security but is Signal better or Telegram better in terms of overall usage and security?

TBH I'm in the USA so mostly use iMessage or SMS. I use WeChat to talk to some friends but I would not consider it secure at all. I have a special dislike for Zuckerberg so that's mostly my dislike for WhatsApp but likely any messenger app is secure enough for most conversations like can you pick up bread after work or planning to go out for the weekend. I would not feel they are secure enough for data like credit card numbers or conversations like I'm going to the bank at noon to withdraw a large sum of money.

I found this article and it seems to go over some points

I am not a big fan of Zuckerberg but i have no choice but to use Whatsapp as most of my contacts uses Whatsapp. But in Indonesia its weird, the government did block Telegram a few months back. I might give Signal a try :D and thanks ill read the link you posted.

I use iMessage as much as I can here. Most of my coworkers and bosses seem to prefer it. For those that don’t have an iPhone it’s signal or discord. When I went overseas years ago for work I was surprised to see how much WhatsApp was used.

- Signal is better for security but has way less users.
- Telegram has many more users and has a reasonable amount of security.

Some of my WhatsApp groups have transitioned over to Telegram. So now I have: iMessage, Hangouts, WhatsApp, and Telegram. It's quite annoying

I'm getting so sick and tired of running Slack, Discord, Hangouts, Signal, Teams, iMessage, and Skype just to be able to communicate to everyone I need to during the work day.

I miss the old days of Pidgin or Adium...

I mostly use WhatsApp, that is the most popular IM app here in South Africa by a huge margin, I don’t even think iMessage makes into the Top 5 down here as Telegram, FB Messenger and a few others are also quite big, but WhatsApp is by far the biggest, many businesses also use WhatsApp for Business services to deal with customers.

I also use iMessage but that’s not very often, a lot of my friends and family have iPhones but most people we know outside of our own circle use mostly Android, and WhatsApp is the go-to service.

I really like iMessage, but unfortunately the high volume of android devices in my country make iMessage less of a go-to.

You are saying that the US Android users just use SMS?
Some may be using RCS, depending on if the carrier has implemented it or not. That's Google's version of 'iMessage' with the ability to sync, send rich media and read receipts (along with 'typing' indicators).

But other than an SMS and any proprietary messaging systems, what other type of carrier side messaging is available to Android users?

I’m saying iOS users just use the default Messages app so that’s automatically iMessage when messaging other iPhone users or SMS when messaging Android users.

As for US Android users, the ones who text me do. I don’t know if they use other IM apps but they use plain text when they message me.
