do you mean to say you will only turn it on once a month/few weeks? i wouldnt recommend that for long term storage - as one day it just wont turn on.

from this wiki site there are some pretty important factors, mainly temp, humidity, and power ups/downs. powering on the device more puts more stresses on the heads/mechanisms and causes problems. also, leaving the drives off for longer periods mirrors that of leaving a car off for longer - the parts just prefer being used more then rested.

Thanks for the info! I'll try to run the drive a bit more often. I put it in an area on my desk where it's easily accessible.

I also added a pair of the new WD MyPassports right beside the MyBook, both 500gb. One for Time Machine backups, and the other exclusively for large downloads, both replacing older drives that did the same duty. They're all piano-black finish with pinhole activity lights, matching the MyBook. I must say WD really nailed it in the looks department. They look incredibly classy together as a trio.

no probs, yeh please do run them as often as you can for as long as you can.

very nice setup that you have there they do look pretty sexy! i do prefer the alu look of the cases, and have a number that mirror the look. black is awsome too though (black is the new silver? ).
