Brick - film noir murder mystery starring Joseph Gordon Levitt

I'm surprised that Requiem for a Dream was mentioned, as I didn't know it was underappreciated. I was under the impression that everyone loved it as much as I do.

Hero - martial arts epic starring Jet Li

Wet Hot American Summer - lazy slapstick comedy with Janeane Garafalo, David Hyde Pierce

Noises Off - farce set in a Broadway show. huge cast. - Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, Desmond Llewelyn, Christopher Reeves, John Ritter, Marilu Henner, Nicolette Sheridan, and more...

I just wanted to agree with those who said some of my favorite movies of all time:

The Science of Sleep
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Jon Brion is a god)
Punch Drunk Love (again, Jon Brion is a god)
Memento
Pan's Labyrinth (Javier Navarette is also a god)
Brick (is probably my favorite movie)
Noises Off

One Hour Photo was very good too

I wanted to add:

The Lookout - another Joseph Gordon Levitt movie. It had beautiful music (James Newton Howard), and Joseph's character was wonderfully crafted.

Agreed, PlaceofDis - it is just such an over the top movie, and Luc Besson's vision is just amazing.
its one of those movies that you just can't take seriously. its a truly fun film to me. just action and a bit over the top in every way

What is wrong with you?! JK. I love the film also. I find myself watching it frequently. I actually have it ripped and put onto my iPod so I have actually fallen asleep listening to it a few times, not out of boredom, but because it's night time and it's sitting on my headboard.

I'll also second (or are we at third… or fourth now) Memento. It is a very well edited movie. Every time I watch it I think I remember the story, but I always seem to forget what happened and I get to enjoy the film all over again.

The Science Of Sleep
Me And You And Everyone We Know
Odd, I couldn't get through The Science of Sleep but Me and You and Everyone We Know is definitely one of my favorite movies.

(and almost all other Miyazaki films!!!)
YES! I adore Miyazaki's films. I own most of them on DVD. Nausicaa. Castle in the Sky. Totoro. Whisper of a Heart. Kiki's Delivery. And of course, the more well-known contemporary ones.

He Love Me, He Loves Me Not (AMAZING, and yet another Audrey... I swear it's not just because I like her, they're all great films in different ways.)
I do like that one, but not one of my favorites. Oh, and in case anyone's wondering, it's Audrey Tautou and not Audrey Hepburn. ;) And I'm wondering if you're misunderstanding the thread title as some of the titles you've listed are very much so highly-rated. :p Such as Amelie.

Pan's Labyrinth
Mm, I thoroughly enjoyed that in the theater. I really should see it again. *shiver* Creepy eyeball hand monster thingie. Ugh.

Alice in Wonderland.
Which? I'm sure more than one has been made by now. And I've only seen the Disney one and some kooky real-person type one. Be curious to see others.

I think About a Boy is quite underrated. Most glaze over it as Hugh Grant is in it, but it's actually a lovely mix of a bit of humor, a little darkness, and a tiny bit of weightiness. I love it.

I wonder if The Royal Tenenbaums is underrated or not. But I love that Wes Anderson film.

I own most, but I have actually never seen Nausicaa! And I notice that you didn't mention Princess Mononoke--which is the only (and still masterful) Miyazaki that I do not like.

Well, it is highly rated on the internet, yeah, but I highly doubt that anyone I know has seen it, and few have even heard of it, unless I've told them about it.

I would say that it is underrated by the general public... but maybe you're right in that I've missed the point of this post. Underrated by critics, no. :)

Amelie was big, and highly rated by critics and the type of people who would actually go watch a foreign film. Of course, even if you heard of it and were interested in watching this film when it was released, that would be difficult if you live in the sticks. The film is famous, but access to the film may be limited. It all depends on geography.

Anyway, I'm adding IMAX Deep Sea 3D and Life Aquatic to my list.

So:
Alice in Wonderland (Disney)
IMAX Deep Sea 3D
Life Aquatic

Wizards

They Live

Spaceballs

12 monkeys

The Dark Crystal

The Muppet Movie (the original movie, not the sequels)

Ali G Indahouse

*** The Iron Giant ***

...
Life Aquatic.

My mom actually just recommended Amelie to me a few days ago, I'm really looking forward to seeing it!

Life Aquatic? I did not care for that movie one bit, I couldn't get past 30 minutes in!

Yet another vote for UHF.

I also vote for "Secret Sunshine", though I'm not sure if that counts as "underrated" since it is so new. Still cannot believe it didn't win the Palm D'Or.... I saw that on a Delta flight from Munich to Atlanta(they had a lot of Japanese and Korean films) and it makes me want to go out and see more Korean films. Not a big fan of any Japanese movies aside from Tampopo though....

A couple of my faves are :

Falling Down
Fifth Element

Not questioning your taste in films, but these are hardly hidden gems or underrated classics are they?

Fifth Element was a huge great heavily advertised summer blockbusting beast, and Falling Down had a lot of fuss about it too.

Both great mind.

And I notice that you didn't mention Princess Mononoke--which is the only (and still masterful) Miyazaki that I do not like.
;) I lump that in with "the more well-known contemporary ones."

His super blockbuster famous contemporary ones are: Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle. I still love those ones, just not as much as his older movies. :p

Life Aquatic
Heh. <3 Wes Anderson. But as it stands, Life Aquatic isn't as endearing to me as his others (still haven't seen The Darjeeling Limited).

Another fairly obscure favorite: "Quiz Show." This highly underrated film is probably Robert Redford's best effort as a director. It was really misunderstood when it came out, and is pretty well forgotten now, unfortunately.

I've seen a couple of nominations for "12 Monkeys." I could not get through ten minutes of that film, and I like Terry Gilliam. So I will nominate a couple of his other creations: "The Brothers Grimm" and (of course) "Brazil."

be sure to listen to the extra interviews on the DVD as well. good stuff.
