In order to properly calibrate the Apple Watch for workouts I read that it was critical to toggle on Motion Calibration & Distance in Location Services->System Services. I typically have all of these off (except Find my iPhone). And I do notice that the location status bar icon is on constantly due to the change.

Is there any information out there on what the impact on battery life is? And is it used for everything for the watch? Or just when an activity is logged in workout?

I made the executive call to turn on Location Services for lots of the apps that I like. I have not noticed a material impact on battery life on my phone. My personal opinion is turn them all on and enjoy the full capabilities of the phone and watch. If these make the difference in battery life at the end of the day, then get a Mophie.
