Moto G off-contract/unlocked: $179 for 8GB; $199 for 16GB

I'll wait until the G2, hopefully by then there'll be an SD slot and hopefully 4G support. 3G only and a 720 camera aren't that big a deal, but seeing as my SII is essentially my iPod Classic replacement, I'd really prefer a large storage capacity.

It's not that. Every piece of hardware you stick in a phone from an sd card reader, to a higher pixel screen, to lte support all increase the cost, pushing the phone up into a higher bracket. What moto is doing here is stripping out extras and options you find in higher spec'd phones and keeping the cost as low as possible.
I think what they are doing it great. it may not be the phone for everyone (including me) but I can think of lots of people who will jump on it given the price and specs.

Pricing is a bit askew, here.
8GB version is £135 at Amazon
16GB version is £160 at Amazon
Slightly better pricing available from carriers for the 8GB version with a top up plus cashback from Quidco and TCB, but people are not 100% sure whether or not these will lock or not, although Motorola has said that sim-free phones will remain unlocked.
Ordered the 16GB as a spare phone. Was looking at the Razer i, but the Intel SoC cannot run Tomtom, which is a dealbreaker, plus this one will get Kitkat in January.
For those of you in the US how do you plan on getting your hands on a moto g before its released in january?
I got mine on Thursday - I paid £99.99 on PAYG upgrade. It comes unlocked and accepts any microsim. The screen is gorgeous, much better than my SP in terms of viewing angles, brightness etc. Battery life seems to be good, also. I hammered it yesterday for 12 hours and still had 35% left.
Performance is very good for a phone costing £100
It's virtually stock android with just 2 Motorola apps - both of which are useful.
Overall I'm impressed with the Moto G, especially for its price.

Yes, Phones4U. I had an Orange sim which I'd used in the past few months.
Don't think you get such a good deal if it's a T-Mobile, Virgin etc. If you don't get it as PAYG upgrade then the price is £129.99 - but you do get a sim card of your choice plus £10 credit.
Sim-free is £134.99. (Which seems pointless.)
This is the 8GB version - they don't have any 16GB for a few weeks. It's plenty storage for me as I stream all my music from Google Play Music All Access. Movies and games I play on my new Nexus 7. Motorola also give you 50GB extra storage on Google Drive (which I'm not sure I'll find a use for).

This phone really hits the sweet spot of price for performance. My wife has been using used iphones for a while, but this will be her next phone. I just wish it would be out in the US before the holidays. And while I currently use a Nexus 4, for what I do with my phone, I will seriously consider this phone if/when I need a new one. With choices like the Nexus 5 and Moto G, the iPhone just looks massively over priced to me.
Pretty amazing for only being 179 dollars. The screen is definitely better than most phones in the price range. Heck it could be argued that its better than any of the iPhones screens lol. Glad to see motorola embracing an enhanced stock android experience instead of rewriting every core app like the other manufacturers.
A few videos that were posted elsewhere. Screen looks awesome from the videos and the speaker sounds pretty loud and has some bass to it. Only real concern is lack of free space on the 8Gb and the camera is just "ok" but for a phone this cheap you can't have it all. You also get a 50Gb of space on google drive for 2 years.

The days of US$700 phones will soon be over. This phone doesn't have everything, but next year it probably will. I'm so glad companies like Moto, Google and T-Mobile are shaking things up, finally. Phones and phone services have been a rip-off for too long.
Good work Motorola for finally offering a device that doesn't suck in the cheap Android phone market. I'm interested in seeing how well these things sell around the world. I was browsing at Target the other day and the current under $200 prepaid phone options are simply awful. Would be awesome if this phone was picked up as a prepaid option.
People are starting to vote with their wallets. Lot's of people have had it and have or are jumping ship to t mobile.
The only reason I'm hanging on to my Xperia SP is because it is 4G.
Apart from that, the Moto G is better in every area that I care about, esp. screen and battery life (don't use the camera much on my phones, so don't know about that). 6 months unlimited data on T-Mobile here for £20 is pretty good, also.
Note the blueness of the Sony's screen versus the Moto G in this picture, it's like that in real usage - fuzzy and washed-out. If Motorola can produce a much better screen in a phone costing half or less then other companies can, too.

Heh. T-Mobile had a glitch on its website the other day for a few hours. It had a sim only 12 month contract with 250 mins, 500 txt and 500MB for £0.00 monthly. T-Mobile has honoured all those who signed up.
I have had a contract with T-Mobile for the last two years and I have never paid more than 98p a month thanks to generous cashback deals or glitches as above. Gawd bless British carriers and their cock ups.
I picked one of these up today, because I've been wondering what Android is like (currently have an iPhone 5) and at the price it seemed like the best option. So far it's quite a nice phone - the screen is good, size is about the same as my iphone 5 in a Pixelskin HD case (the Moto is slightly bigger, but not by much), but the camera doesn't seem that great at least indoors. It'll take me a while to learn all the ins and outs of Android, but so far so good. Oh, I also got a free white replacement shell as Phones4U have an offer at the moment.
Both the Moto G and the Nexus 5 make me wonder what the future holds for Android handsets - the Moto G is a mid range handset at an entry level price, and the Nexus is a higher end handset with a more mid range price. I wonder how the other manufacturers will react...?
