Motorola Atrix 4G Hands-On

Does anyone see the problem with these devices/smartphones? I mean seriously, did you take a step back and look at the whole solution and why this was even needed in the first place?

You make a smartphone that has a dual core processor and 1GB RAM. You can now dock it to a laptop/desktop like station. Then what you get is a low end netbook style computer.

I see a big failure in these devices because they go full circle back to the original problem with desktops/laptops - you want a portable device and this isn't the right way to go about it. Why not just invent something like an iPad - of course Apple has.

It's more of a smartphone that has the option to dock but that extra docking option is utterly lame. If you stuck that Atrix phone into a hole that resides inside a tablet, that would make more sense. I see these companies all try hard to be creative but I don't think this is the right thinking - you are technically going backwards in time recreating another laptop/desktop or netbook like feature which everyone is trying to get away from. I don't think these companies invest enough time to think through what consumers want to have. They follow the low minority group of spec whores who love to showboat specs and features that aren't gonna be used more than twice ever.

I watched that demo and it looks like a low end netbook setup - also the fact it runs flash is meh because it runs it choppy with low stuttering frame rates. Experience is key - I don't want to run something that wasn't optimized to run like it was suppose to in the first place. Just because you can slap on flash don't mean you should and I see absolutely no real big deal for me to fork over my money for the Atrix. I definitely would NEVER get in line (if there was one) for the Atrix like I would the iPad/iPad2. In fact, if they unveiled the iPad2 with the new updated screen/resolutions, I would not even need to see it in person - I would wait day one with my money out to buy it. That's because I have faith in Apple to deliver a product that I want to use...not something like this Atrix. In fact, i don't even care to see it in person. The product is so meh.

I see pleanty of appeal for this device for a person like myself. I don't want multiple devices. That dock would be great for me, a person who hardly has any need for a computer at home. All I really do is surf the net, and since getting an iPhone, the laptop has probably been fired up maybe once a month. For the times where I know I'm gonna be typing a long letter or something is when I use the laptop. If the price for the dock is around a 100 bucks, I'd be down. I'd for sure want something like this over an iPad. IPad has no appeal to me, it doesn't really do anything that an iPod touch can't.

it has a bigger screen and you can put it in a keyboard dock :/

i don't suppose the dock's gonna be 'around 100 bucks'
and if it were, i'd spend the extra 150 to get a proper netbook that runs HD flash smoothly.

the linux+firefox combo on the atrix, while an impressive feature, looks sluggish (especially when running flash) and -to me- kind of ugly :/

Also, when we heard the news about the CDMA iPhone not supporting data and voice at the same time, everyone went totally bonkers about it. With this thing, you'll have to interrupt your working / surfing session every single time someone calls, having to re-wiggle it into the netbook dock.

i just see no point in carrying around an 'empty shell' the size of a netbook. Why not bring a proper netbook then?
Netbooks are hilariously cheap anyways. For the extra 100-150 bucks over the dock (that's not gonna be below 100 dollars), you can then run every piece of windows software you desire.

the media dock, however, looks pretty neat.

i'd still be scared of motorola's upgrade policy, considering the atrix is such a 'special case'. i suppose Android 2.4 will be as good as it gets with this one

Well, on the 100 bucks I'm obviously speculating, but I couldn't imagine it bieng very much more. The price point of the dock is what's gonna make or break it for someone like me. Yes, if I could get the dock for 150 cheaper than a netbook, then I would do it. If the difference was 50, then it would be another story. I haven't seen the atrix running flash (because my iPhone
doesn't run flash at all and I haven't gone to to the YouTube app to look for the video) but I'd be interested in checking it out. I'd hold out on judging it until it is actually released. As for voice and data, they will also work simultaneously. It will either go to BT or speakerphone.

I'm not really up to speed on what there upgrade policy is, so I can't say anything about that. To be honest, I'm talking more about the idea of the phone and docking station more than this particular phone. I admit I like what I see, but I wanna see what other makers like apple and htc put out in q2 of this year. Seems like most of the heavy hitters come out around the middle of the year, iirc, iPhones, droid, droid incredible, droid x, evo, etc.

4.5 inch is ridiculous (so was 4.3). Acer's phone-tablet is 4.8. What is wrong with today's society?

Use mutli quote man.

That being said what size do you like. I am a fan of 4in.

Sorry - I haven't figured out how to use it in the mobile version of MR. (mods?)

To answer your question, I think 4" hits the spot. ;)

Motorola comes out with a phone which does just about everything... 8MP camera, big screen, TURNS INTO A LAPTOP and runs desktop apps, dual core processor, etc....

Look. If you love your iphone, GREAT. Buy a new one every year and be happy. Buy a macbook, ipad, and ipod and have fun with all your gadgets.

-EDIT-
Trolling? As if. Everything I wrote can be read for yourself and observed in the thousands of posts on this forum.
