Bitch bitch bitch. Go buy a Dell and run Windows. Oh no! I only get 4-6 hours of battery life. First world problems people. Wtf?

I think you mainly see this with MacBook Pros due to the discrete GPU. It's probably just errant apps engaging the discrete video. If you notice, when users run apps that force the system to use only integrated, the battery power seems fine.

I still get 8 hours on my Air. It's been the same on Lion and Mountain Lion. The theories that somehow Mountain Lion is "doing more", causing more battery drain do not show here.

Unfortunately it hasn't fixed the sound bug for me. When I boot from Lion on an external HD, no problem can run for hours playing music. ML after a short while it just breaks up. Terrible.

Mac OS X Mountain Lion is obviously doing more things in the background, thus eating battery life.

You can't simply file a bug to 'increase battery life'. That's ludicrous.

No, the bug would be "battery life is terrible". It's up the engineers to figure out why and how to fix it. Either the QA people didn't notice the battery life, or the engineers or their bosses didn't care to put the time into fixing it.

I don't think it's acceptable to say, "Well, OS X does more now." That wasn't acceptable when they redesigned much of the OS X kernel to have good battery life on the iPhone, and it shouldn't be on Lion & Mountain Lion just because there's stuff going on in the background. Apple shouldn't have released ML with such poor battery performance, period.

FWIW, I've seen no drop in battery life. I'm on a brand new 2012 i7 13 inch MBP. Right now with just Safari up I'm at 51% battery, with 4hrs remaining!

Granted, I only ran Lion for about a week before updating to ML, so I don't have much to compare it with...but the battery life on this machine has been right in line with my expectations (5-7hrs depending on what I'm doing)

Off-topic, but there are other problems with 10.8.1 - Trillian, Chrome

After updating to ML 10.8.1 today, Apple Mail finally works with our office's Exchange 2012 server. Unfortunately, now both Trillian and Google Chrome crash on startup. Thank God Mailplane still works!

Anyone else having issues with Trillian or Chrome with 10.8.1?

That should read Exchange 2010 server - not that it matters, the issues are with Trillian and Chrome. :)

What happened to quality control and customer satisfaction watchdogs within Apple.

Apple QC? Do you really believe Apple cares about you? All they care about is taking your money and pretending to care about your issues. By the time ML's battery issues are supposed to be fixed, they'll release 10.9 and make you spend more money hoping for a fix that'll never happen.

My battery life improved after updating to 10.8.1.

Battery life under light usage (Mid 2012 cMBP 15", 2.7 i7, hdd, 25% brightness - I'm currently in a dark room, web surfing, and microsoft word open, connected via ethernet with wifi off.)

With 10.8 under the same conditions above, I would get roughly 5.5 to 6.5 hours at 100% battery. So I'm very happy that I've reclaimed some of my battery life back. :D

Here is a screenshot of my battery life when I'm just using Microsoft Word.

-Also: I am using gfxCardStatus with it set to only use the integrated graphics card (HD4000)

A little off topic but I created your desktop picture that you got from simpledesktops.com :)

EDIT: I actually did use my MBP Early 2011 to create it, which has seen a decrease in battery life since 10.8. Will see what 10.8.1 does.

Lion vs Mountain Lion

This is my first Mac...thanks for all the applause! In my case the upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion has created the following conditions. Here is a rundown and how I worked around them.

1. System goes to sleep while downloading a file unatended resulting in long or failed downloads.
Workaround – I play and or pause a movie file while downloading, it's simple, it works, it's obvious on my desktop and doesn't involve installing more software or changing settings that can be forgotten.

2. Garbled display when undocking from a cinema display requiring hard restart resulting in lost data.
Workaround – Open the lid and wait for the display to appear then undock.

3. Short Battery Life
Workaround – None, recharge more often.

In my opinion Mountain Lion 10.8.1 is not worth upgrading to at this time.
Mountain Lion added a lot of nifty features that I have no interest in pertaining to my work. I stick to a few basic programs I use which I need a Mac to run. Given the shorter battery life, garbled display and the fact that the system shuts down while working unatended on a job this version OSX is not an improvement.

What are you doing without AdBlock for your browser?

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=adblock

I've never seen a Flash ad on MacRumors :)

I don't use that because I want MR to exist, which they won't if they can't serve people ads. Sometimes the ads interest me too. Blocking ads is almost stealing. You're using content that you're not paying for in any way, including by looking at ads.

It is not about bitching you Mac fan boy. If it is not 7 hours as advertised, Apple should shove it or expect law suits for false advertisement. It is a matter of principle. Why on earth would you not complain if you are ripped off from false advertisement?

10.8.1 Woes

Since updating to 10.8.1 my 2009 13" MBPro is crawling through webpages and apps at a snails speed. Anybody else experiencing this issue?

Forget battery life right now, I can hardly use the machine. Help!

It's not bitching. If Apple said the batteries lasted 4 hours then we would all be ready for 4 hours of battery life. If they say 7 hours, and you install a new OS on your computer and it goes down to 2 hours, that's a problem.

And regarding the first world problems comment, I totally agree, but thats what this website is all about.

Rubbish operating system for a company turning into everything I hate about Windows

I have an early 2008 MBP and the battery drains much faster on Mountain Lion, I also have the older Leopard install on another partition, which lasts much longer on battery.

Unfortunately I have migrated all the software and data to 10.8 and can't easily switch back to Leopard.

Upgraded to 10.8.1 but did not notice any improvement.

Noticing much worse battery life on my mbp 13", early 2011, now that I've upgrade to 10.8.1.

I went from 50% at 12:20 down to 16% just now. Going to have to do a fresh install and see if that fixes the issue.

But before on 10.8.0, I was getting at least 3-4 hours of battery life. Now its 90 mins or less per charge.

I skipped Lion and upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion recently.

Battery life went from 8 hours+ to about 60-70 minutes. That's insane! My Mid 2009 MBP is now effectively a desktop.

I have upgraded from 10.8 to 10.8.1 and that possibly added a few minutes to the battery time (couldn't say for sure) but that is besides the point.

On top of the battery issues, even simple tasks like checking mail is now a veryyy slow process indeed - even with my MBP's decent 2.53 Ghz Core 2 Duo and 4GB RAM. It's like going 10 years back in time.

What was essentially a really good laptop is now everything but. I am frantically going through all my drawers trying to find my old Snow Leopard installation disks - but I can't find it ... modern computation life is rubbish.

I was happy to buy ML, but I won't be buying "Leaky Kitten" or whatever 10.9 is called if these battery drain problems still occur. And if newer Macs have 2x the battery size, then they're being sloppy and providing end runs instead of fixes. The battery life on these higher end units is sold at 7 hours. Not 3.5. As others said, the little asterisks by these claims are a lame end-run and allow legitimate claims of "misadvertising" to be raised. I like some of 10.8, but with battery life being why one does mobile, 10.6 is still the more viable solution.

Like others said, the preference of new features over retaining of of the things that drove me to Apple from Windows (feature creep, nothing getting fixed in Windows, followed by Apple (Leopard, Snow Leopard) being tighter written and with actual improvements than empty fluff being thrown in... )

But ANY improvements with battery life are nice to see... but, as others said, 10.6 was not referenced in that chart and it's easy to guess as to why... :( :(

Thank God for my iMac and iPad! :p

I'm glad for my Mac Pro, but when the iPad can run a full, proper Photoshop and Dreamweaver (with wired attachments, since bluetooth eat battery life for breakfast -- and far more than the (understandable) complaints about Flash ever will, and at least one can disable Flash from any browsers worth using...)
