I have set up a share on the my NAS to mount at login by dragging the mount icon (from a manual mount) into my 'login items'. Onced logged in it mounts but opens a finder window with the share's contents. I also tried doing the auto mount using the following script (x = NAS ip addy):

    mount volume "smb://guest:mad:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/public"

Once logged in a script popup asks to run the script, if 'run' is clicked all is well.

I am merely trying to have the share mount silently, no user input.

I've done this with both SMB and AFP using applescript and putting the script in my login items. I tried originally with Automator but couldn't get past the "silent" part, even when passwords were cached; Applescript did the trick as I could pass it username/password information that way.

See my post in this thread. Is that what you're trying to do?

For clarification, you're using the applescript aforementioned? I've done this on at least 3 installs of Tiger but haven't tested on Leopard. What are your specs?
