Get the shot

Dude, go get the shot already. I got bitten by a stray dog a few days ago (nasty critter bit right through my jeans and into my leg  ). I just got the second shot (in a series of five) this morning. It scarcely hurts (I could barely feel it). The injection is done into the upper arm.

Once you get rabies, you are dead. There is NO CURE. So when you have a chance of certain death on the one hand, then it is always better to get the shot, no matter how much it costs and/or hurts.

Here in India, the shots are cheap. Each shot cost Rs. 350 (less than US $9) plus Rs. 20 "pricking charge". :D

1. If I go to the doctor they will say I need a rabies shot nomatter what.
That's right. And what's wrong with that? I you've been exposed to a rabid rat bite, you get the shot = smart. If it turns out you haven't been exposed to rabies and still get a shot, = smart.

2. I'm 14 (didn't want to say that)
What does that have to do with anything regarding treating a rat bite?

3 The nearest hospital is 15 miles away.
25 minute car trip.

I'm still thinking whether to go or not.
If you don't go, and you've been infected, that's not a wise choice or gamble.

Go get the professional attention you need.

Are you a city guy? You see I live in the country, and I have a country spirit, so I still won't stop playing with wild animals. Thank you all for your opinion. :)
I MIGHT get it checked out.
Oh my god. Go to the doctor. But it's probably too late now since it's Sunday. Basically you're stuck with two options: wait it out at home and be concerned about what you have or go to the hospital and get a shot and get on with your life.

I live in the country and if I was bitten by a snake or mouse or something (besides my dog and the neighbors cats), I get a shot, especially since I took biology and learned that even non-poisonous snakes carry tetnus.

Seriously, you are more stubborn than the kid who sits next to me in study hall and Driver's Ed, and he's a Windows lover.

Um, if you're only 14, surely your parents could take you to the doctor and pay for the consultation and shot...

not only that, i don't think your parents will be upset with you for wanting to see the doctor if that's what you're afraid of. get the shot. what does it say when everybody here has told you the same advice?

They will pay, I thought the shot was like $500 my parents are VERY tight on money right now. So being only $30 or less I'll be going to the doctor Monday.

Oh, the reseon I said I was 14 is because kids are tough. But still, to the Monday.

Why don't you come play with a random mouse in New York...I garantee you will change your mind set of "Fun".

Serious though.....be safe.

Bless

LOL!! you have big mice there? I've seen a rat 10" long before. That was gross

In New York City, I'd say 10" is smaller than average for the typical sewer rat. In fact, I've heard that some grow so large that they are able to come above ground during the day on Wall Street and cannot be distinguished from the general population. :D

On a serious note...I'm glad you saw reason and are going to the doctor. :)

Your parents may be tight on money but dude this is MEDICAL need....

as someone else pointed out that a funeral would be MUCH more expensive not to mention the emotional damage it would do to your parents, especially if they somehow found out about this thread.

This is beginning to sound like a Darwin award.

EDIT: I am sure when you are in pain and begining to feel the effects of rabies you won't hide that from your parents. That treatment which probably won't be successful anyway will cost BOATLOADS MORE then if just get the shots.

LOL, I told them right away, they said I would be alright.

That's just plain irresponsible, and I'm pretty sure that qualifies as awful parenting, if not criminal negligence.

Just FYI, if you notice any numbness, mostly in the area of the bite, get to the hospital ASAP.

if he's been exposed to rabies it's a public health issue.
True dat.

So being only $30 or less I'll be going to the doctor Monday.
Well... they'll be a little more than $30... but maybe insurance will cover some of it. You know... the insurance that all parents are required to get... the one that protects you in the event that your child plays with wild animals...

This is beginning to sound like a Darwin award.
True dat. Again.

Alright, I don't have to go to the doctor everybody in my family says I'll be alright. If I die (which I won't) they will just toss me in the woods. :)
If I die I'll let you all know. ;)

I suggest you go around biting all the members of your family...then see if they change there mind. If money is tight around your house, could be that they've decided to use vermin as form of post-uteral birth control...their story on rabies could change if there's a chance they have it.

I play with a lot of random mice, there fun. Anyway how much does a rabies shot cost?

What the hell?

Are you a city guy? You see I live in the country, and I have a country spirit, so I still won't stop playing with wild animals.

My family has owned farms in extremely rural Minnesota since the early 1800s and I don't recall ever hearing of anybody ever playing with random mice they've found.

If your not going to listen to these people then do us a favor and not ask us for our opinion.

Look at it this way - if they can afford to buy Macs, chances are they can afford a few vaccines. Obviously it's not that simple but it's a good story :p .

And I wasn't using "the power of suggestion" when I was talking about the numbness, I was being very serious. That's pretty much the late-state warning for rabies...

My sister-in-law said that rabies hardly exist anymore. And It's not like the mouse was chasing me.

it sounds like you're trying to convince us to say, "yeah, you're probably right. you're not going to get rabies, and you shouldn't worry about it." but no one is going to tell you that. you asked for the community opinion, and we gave you a unanimous answer--go to the doctor. as the old phrase goes, it's better to be safe than sorry.
