Mouse Scroll Wheel Not Working

for some reason the scroll wheel on the mouse doesnt work but everything else does. does anyone know why this is happening?

The Mighty Mouse has well known problems with grime getting under the ball.

Although I usually just turn it upside-down on the mousepad and run it back-and-forth several times.
