I know this might not be entirely relevant but I thought I'd give it a shot before fraternising with our white-cursored friends and signing up to one of their forums.

I have three mice: at present, all are blind:
    1. A Wacom Grapire Tablet (which needs a driver from the Wacom site)
    2. A Microsoft wired IntelliMouse
    3. A Mikomi wireless mouse
When I plug 2 or 3 in, windows says 'found new hardware' and the cursor starts moving. In a few seconds it says 'hardware installed and ready to use' and the cursor stops working.

I believe the fault to lie in mouse 1. During the installation of the Wacom Driver, the 'found new hardware' dialogue comes up and closes a few times, which suggests that Wacom suppresses any uninstalled mice (presumably so Windows doesn't interfere or try to install it). So I uninstalled the Wacom driver, but the other mice still don't work.

All the mice are fully operational on other computers. Operating System: XP SP2

So I need to find out what goes on between 'found new hardware' and 'installed and ready to use' which stops my mice working.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Try rolling back the driver for the normal mouse. Open device manager and you should see the mouse there, double click to bring up the properties, then driver, and rollback is at the bottom. I can make screen shots if you want, but it might take a few minutes.

That's what I immediately thought about doing, but the problem is for all mice. My MacBook will just not talk to any mice for over a few seconds. Since there's no problem with refreshing or re-installing the drivers (I am forever uninstalling the mouse's drivers in Device Manager.

But then again... the same driver would be used for all the mice I've tried (mouhid.sys). So rolling it back might just work... although I'm sure the problem is in the small patchwork of files which activate upon the detection of a mouse.

I'm rebooting now to have a bash.

    Robert,

Thanks for your help, but I have no idea where to procure an older driver onto which I could 'roll back'.

It just says that I don't have any backed up, would I like to open the troubleshooter and/or go insane?

    Any ideas?

If it says that, then it means it's on the basic xp driver. You may need to reinstall XP.

Yup, (and not for the first time) but I was just wondering if anyone could save me that hours' rummaging for the CD and hours' installation and hours' transferring all my vitally important data back *cough*:games

    Anyone?

Hopefully, someone smarter than me will come along and give you the answer before you start on all that work, but since Murphy is already in your neighborhood ...

Was that a reference to Murphy as in Murphy's Law? Because I had to Wikipedia that to get it (over this side of the pond we call him 'Sod').

Please keep coming with those answers, people! I think I might have lost my Windoze CD!

Yes, it is ... I thought that not everyone might get the reference once I hit submit.
