This is just SAD:

Hostel won the weekend box office with $20.1 million... beating both Narnia and King Kong.

THAT is why they didn't allow pre-screenings for critics... a lot of people wouldn't have gone to see the movie. They just went from losing money to making a LOT of it in a single weekend based on that one decision.

that's what i miss from europe. usually the really bad movies never show up in europe or with a long delay. so you can read the reviews and save your money.

i saw once a movie exec saying on tv that (most) movies are only profitable if the first weekend is good. after that the movie is a blockbuster and makes cash or it was bad and people read the reviews and avoid the movie. that's why they don't prescreen movies that maybe bad. he also said that only 1 out of 5 movies makes money and compensates for the losses in bad movies. that means 80% of hollywoods work is bad!!!!

it's been a long time since i saw a really good movie (that was not a high tech remake of an old story. in general i admit i like these remakes because of the technology and special effects. but i'm hoping for a new story, a new idea, something that surprises me.)

Yes, on DVD. It was OK. I gave it a shot because I like to see indie movies, something different than the stardard CGI-alien, hero-kills-7-bad-guys-with-6-bullets, weepy-pretty-boy-romantic-comedy type stuff that comes out of Hollyweird.

Primer is a movie you have to follow very closely, it's a little confusing at times. It's about time travel but you have to think about it and keep hitting the rewind to follow what's going on. It won't appeal to everyone.

Edit: Yes, it was a slow movie but it held my interest enough to watch it.

primier was not a good movie...i tried my best to watch it awake but couldnt. i really wanted to like this movie but it wasnt made well.

P.S. i watched it twice since i fell asleep three times in one minute and about 50times in the movie

Bless

^^ yes i know and i understand the cuts they made but they might as well dig out more money to complete the project. i know it was a indie film but it wasnt good to me...i respect what they did and the effort cuz i know what it takes but i didnt like it.
I hope one day i get to make a film with $17000...

Bless

I was expecting more, WAY MORE!
January is the typical month when studios dump all the crap that's not good enough to show last summer or holiday season. These movies I wouldn't even bothering renting, much less even wanting to download for free of BT. LOL!

You'd generally want to avoid any movie released from now until April. It's all dreck.

Here's to the Crazy Ones

Funny, I was thinking the same thing - not even worth my bandwidth to download it for free... ;)

I like reading bad reviews. It's hilarious to hear Ebert pan a bad film. Or you could go to the Filthy Critic's site and read filthy, bad reviews of both bad and good films.

I'm not into horror films, but moviegoer friends of mine have said that Hostel is crap.

I like reading them too - I appreciate it when they save me $10.

Funny thing ... first thing I thought of Hostel from the commercials was "based on Saw/Saw II".

Horror movies in general are crap, since the media has desensitized all of us with bad news.
I find it hard to be scared when I keep thinking of the crappiness of the movie.

I also think Hollywood doesn't make as much as it used to because people don't get emotionally attached (i.e. find something/some situation in the movie that relates to themselves).

Last night I saw Hostel with some friends and the theatre was sold out. I thought there was a bit to much lead in before the "stuff" actually began to start take place. The movie didn't represent the greatest acting, but was quite grusome. A couple people walked out and there was a lot of laughing, cheering, and screaming.
The whole premise of the story is kinda F'ed up and disturbing IMO. Nonetheless it proved to be a numbing experience and quite a good horror movie considering the last one I saw, Wolf Creek.

Wolf Creek is by far the worst movie I've ever seen in my life and the critics agree. When I saw it with friends, 5 of the 12 people in the theatre walked out and the movie was horrible. I wish not to reflect on it much longer.

what is really sad is thinking about how many people who would rather sit down and pay for something that is intended to be disgusting and disturbing. it looks repulsive, i had/have no interst in seeing something like that. i am generally pretty easy going with regard to "sick" movies but this one just seemed to cross the line. <shrugs>
thanks for the warning though everyone, i'll definitely pass on this one.

If you haven't seen "The House Of The Dead" you don't know what the word "WORST" means. It was the only time when I asked the guy at the video rental if I could have my money back.

WORST MOVIE EVER! EVER!

Sadly, Uwe Boll has five, count them, FIVE movies coming out in the next couple of years and they are ALL based on video games:

Hunter: The Reckoning (2007) (pre-production)
Point of order, Hunter is based on the pen-and-paper RPG by White Wolf, released in the early 90s. The Hunter videogames are based on the Hunter RPG.

The RPG line had about 20 books before it was retired.

OK, but I guarantee you Boll wouldn't have bought the options if Hunter had remained solely a paper-based RPG.

Haha. My friends saw that movie. I was looking forward to seeing it but they told me not to. So I plan on seeing "Fun with Dick and Jane" instead. :)

They can't make horror movies at Hollywood. Horror movie should be scary, not disgusting and lots of blood and screaming is not scary at all.

I totally agree to those who say you should not see this movie.

Oh, yeah, one more thing, QT sucks.

I liked King Kong, it's not a great movie, but still kind of fun :)

 Save your money, TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT!
I will never see another Hollywood movie in the theatres EVER!

Dude it was sort of a clue when they had to pull out the old bait of "Ambulances had to be called to the theater” I mean please. If you are going to try and reel me in at least use bait that isn’t a 20+ years old. At this point I can do a pretty good job at smelling ****. And this movie had a fairly ripe order to it before it was even released.

Okay, anyone else seen it??
Sry I'm coming into this thread right now, but... one of my friends saw it and said it was the most sick, twisted movie he's ever seen, and then he told me I had to see it. (I think he just wants to see how I'll react, being female)
He said the first half is basically like porn.... and then said he's not complaining. Guys.
So, I was just wondering on... other thoughts people have had about the movie?

if he thinks that is the most sick twisted movie he has seen he hasn't seen much of Takashi Miike or Park
