So as new formats come up often times we are tempted to upgrade to it, I know I am one of them. I had VHS, DVD, Bluray, and now 4K UHD. But, who has bought the same movie in each format because it is just that good and you want to watch it as best quality as possible?

Here are my two:

Blackhawk Down: I had this on VHS before I joined the Army, bought on DVD years later, then Bluray and most recently on 4K bluray.

The Mummy (1999): My wife and I love this movie and had the DVD, then Bluray which we just watched again couple of days ago. Just realized they released a 4K version so I ordered it and will watch it on 4K soon.

I have very few I had on bluray that have been upgraded to 4K.

So what movies have you owned in different formats?

I've never owned a lot of movies, maybe one to two dozen. I started with DVDs, and after my girlfriend gave me a Blu-ray Disc player she didn't want, I upgraded maybe half of them to BD. I got a 4K/HDR television but didn't really think about buying a new 4K player and 4K movies.

Just like I got rid of hundreds of CDs and ripped files and switched to Apple Music, I decided it was time to embrace streaming. So, I've been replacing my movies with ones I purchase through Apple TV. Some of those are still in HD quality, but others are 4K.

Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 are in 4K. A Clockwork Orange, Das Boot, The Flight of the Phoenix (I first saw this as a kid in Germany), and Stargate sadly are not. Gods of Egypt (I've been into ancient Egypt since 5th grade), Lawrence of Arabia, and 2001: A Space Odyssey are in 4K. The last two surprised me considering how old they are, but they both look fantastic.

Personally I have given up with constant changing formats.......🤪
I currently have VHS, Laserdisc, Dvd, HDDvd, Blu-ray.
But past couple of years everything is iTunes.
Don't do paid streaming services.....😠

Ha Ha...I skipped those that I did not use such as Laserdisc, HDDVD...When Bluray and HD DVD came out, for one it was expensive to change over but also I waited to see who would win before making the upgrade.

Yeah nice thing at the time was HDDvd had no region coding, so I could get disks from anywhere.

I think the movie that I've had the most, is either Terminator 2 or Blade Runner. Had those on several different formats across the years (VHS, LD, DVD, BD ...), including buying the same format again as a special / limited edition (and eventually owning them "streaming").

I have a couple of HD-DVD discs somewhere, I think my tech closet (player is decades gone). I have about 30-35 LDs too, and a good Pioneer player, I wish I could find a good home for it. Too had you're in the UK, I'd ship it all your way :D

Yeah, I bought Blackhawk down Special Edition on DVD and someone never returned the movie when they borrowed it so I had to buy another DVD to fill the case. Then later upgraded to Bluray, now to 4K lol.

As a general rule, between DVD, BluRay and UHDBR, I haven't purchased the same movie more than once.

I, very recently, decided to "future proof" myself, so I purchased Joker(2019) and Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood(2019) in dual-format BluRay + UHD-BR.

Cheers

PS>>That's right, i'm sticking with physical media :p

Brings back memories of the old days (showing my age.... 😬) when I could get a US laserdisk film 2-3 months before it was even at the cinema (or theatre) in UK, but it did cost me ~£50 per film.

We had this great music store, you know, used albums / CDs, that had new sales, buy/sell/trade - and they also traded in LDs, with a couple of folks they were huge traders (one guy routinely came in with 30-40 discs to trade) - so I scored a ton of terrific titles for big discounts.

I bought the abyss recently in 4K although technically not available for retail. I’ve owned this either as the directors cut or theatrical on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD/Blu, I just got the 4K light storm package that included Strange Days too.
Should be widely available in late September it’s release was delayed because of the c hinese vi rus

If it’s a great movie I want or a “collection” to add to then Igo for physical media...if not I just catch it when VUDU or iTunes does their $9.99 sale on them.

That's the problem though.....the goalposts keep moving.
Buy a 4kbr today in a few years it's been replaced by something newer.

I mean yeah, but that’s nothing new. I am sure plenty of people upgrade even faster than most, it takes me a while to upgrade my stuff. I just got a 4K TV about a year or two ago, and most TVs in my house still 720 or 1080 at most.

I stopped upgrading other stuff too, got the iPad 10.5, MacBook was upgraded when old one was stolen, and iPhone X was my last upgrade and don’t plan on upgrading until they get rid of the notch.

I think the limit of 35mm film is a resolution of 8k.

Considering many/most “filmmakers” have gone digital, it’s not unreasonable to expect content in the near future being “captured” at higher resolutions.

Of course its diminishing returns IMHO

I think these days people are too picky about image quality (having been spoilt by retina displays).
Maybe it's age talking, but as long as a film has good writing/quality it is entertaining. I even love watching old black and white 'b movie' stuff.

Personal experience watching the reboot of Total Recall at cinema, was uurghhhh.....everything looked too sharp, no motion blur etc........., same with the hfr hobbit it made it look like a soap opera.

Yes that’s what I found when I looked into it, if it was filed in 35MM you are good to upgrade to 4K and it still wont be maxed out.

I guess I am one of those people, Redbox here near by sometimes only has DVDs for some movies instead of Blu-ray and they NEVER have 4K. I will not rent a DVD if that’s all that’s available, I’ll wait for it to get on one of the streaming services I have or rent it for like 99 cents when it drops that low lol.
