Should I worry about tire chains? I will be renting a 16ft Penske

I aksed Penske and they do not supply them and they are quite pricey. Are the chances high that I will need them in 9 days? Best guesses welcome lol

Since its a truck filled with your stuff I would think you'd have enough back weight where it wouldn't matter, I think most of the bad weather went north and south of colorado/kansas also and colorado is pretty good about clearing roads (as I am sure you are aware). You might pick up a few sandbags just in case you need some traction.

My concern is the laws. Is it only for commercial vehicles usually?

I am looking this up on google in parralel and so far, each state is different in regards to chain law

I am leaning towards chancing it and not spening the 100-200 on chains...

What I didn't like

5) Work - engineer....not an engineer in my heart I have figured out

ALot of it is homesickness but alot of it is my job in which I sit at a computer all day and then come home to a boring apt

Are you planning on changing careers?

I think you'll be fine without chains. Just keep an eye on the weather.

I think you'll be fine without chains as well. I drove from Toronto to Los Angeles 2 years ago in February, and the only time that things were a little sketchy was in the mountains of Colorado. I drove a fully packed SUV (the entire trunk and backseat was filled to the ceiling, all the way to the back of the front seats). I had to install convex mirrors on my side mirrors, and my rearview mirror was completely useless. Maybe that's not quite the same as a 16ft Penske, but it's close.....

Congrats on the move-back......

I found a pic of my packed truck:

Schenectady is actually "upstate" New York, no wonder you were bored. All the fun is in "NYC" & the surrounding areas. I'm going to be moving back to NYC in August 2010. I'm sick of Miami,I need a change.

Yeah exactly. Upstate New York is crap and is *nothing* like the City and the surrounding areas.

Yeah, exactly. I went on a roadtrip from DC to Los Angeles, it was smooth sailing except the mountains in Colorado (along with the roads in Texas of all places - it was *so* cold the windows iced over, and we couldn't see ****). We didn't have chains. In other words, you'll be fine. :)

Congrats on the move Duke. I hope you find all that you were missing while separated from those you love and want to be with. Keep us posted on the progress with finding a new job etc..

From my perspective, NY is a fantastic place to go for a visit (as I do to see my in-laws), but I find the northeast the least desirable place to live. The CO, on the other hand, is simply fantastic. You'll be able to enjoy your family and friends, as well as the great outdoors that CO has to offer. Having a rich social life is one of the key factors influencing our mental attitude and happiness. I hope you'll be much happier in CO!

Good luck!

Wow that was quite hard to go through......why am I not estatic but feeling doubt?

I'm not too active on this forum, so I don't really know you, but FWIW I did something similar. Much shorter distance move (about 5 hours, from southwest Virginia to DC area), but I went though similar feelings.

At first I was unsure about it, and I felt some doubt job wise - mainly because I didn't hate my job and liked the people I worked with - but now that I'm up here I could not be happier. I've been here a bit over a year now, and have had a new job for going on 8 months (took me almost 6mos to find it :() and I'm so glad I made the move. I'm nearer my friends and family, in a place that's awesome for young people and living with my best bud.

Once you get there you'll be glad - sometimes you gotta trust your heart over your brain.

Just moved to Hawaii from Oregon a couple months ago, I couldn't be happier.

That's not to say there weren't times where I was stressed like crazy and worried about certain issues mostly pertaining to $$$, but I stuck to my guns and it worked out.

Good luck to you... :D

I concur. If I lived in Schenectady I'd be out of there in a second.
