Hi I have a question about moving files as my MacBook SSD fills up

I want to move some of the bigger files onto my external HD, but I only have 1 that I use for backups, and I don't think it's working. I dragged some files onto the External HD, but it just copied them, it didn't actually move them off of my Mac SSD. Is this because I have this particular drive set up for Time Machine? I'm starting to think I need another external HD if I want to actually move the files off of my Mac. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Whenever you drag a file from one storage device to another, Mac OS assumes you want it to make a copy: for backup, to take to another machine, whatever. If you want to delete the original after you make the copy, you have to do that as a separate action.

Oh I see. That makes sense. Thanks I appreciate the help.
