This is proving to be a nightmare. I've thousands of photos on Google Photos going back to 2010. If I download them using Google Takeout, Google provides all the meta data seperate in a JSON file, if I upload them as is they are just all in a random order with no dates, locations etc. I think Google did this intentionally to stop people moving away.

The only option I see is downloading on the Google Photos app to phone then sync with icloud, this however is a slow process and only so many photos can be selected at a time, 50 I think. It will take ages doing it this way.

Any other ideas?

I’m preparing to do the same thing and was pointed in this direction: https://legault.me/post/correctly-migrate-away-from-google-photos-to-icloud

Sounds promising. Earlier attempts I ran into the same issue as you but didn’t bother trying to find a solution.
