Hi all,

So, moving from android to iPhone. I didn't do the whole "Move to IOS" app garbage thing. I like the idea of starting fresh and clean.

I'm also trying to degoogle myself (thanks to Linus) and am planning moving away from gmail, but right now, my google account has all my contacts etc. So I did login top my google acount on my iPhone to get email for now. What I'd like to know is, is it possible to MOVE/COPY contacts from my Google account to my Apple/iCloud account? Right now, on Contacts Preferences I can only see "Default Account" choice between iCloud and Google.

Thanks!

A few options here. Always best to make a back up of your contacts before attempting anything.

Log into google contacts on a computer (contacts.google.com), select all contacts via checkbox (option appears at the top to select all), once all are selected then there will be a 3 dot menu to the right, click it and select Export. I recommend the vCard option, this should give you a downloaded file with all of your contacts.

If you have a Mac, open the Contact app, do File --> Import, and select your vCard file.

If you are not using a Mac, go to iCloud.com, login (you may need to turn on web access temporarily if using advanced protection), and then go to Contacts app, and then import there.

Easy peasy.

You can do it entirely on the iPhone too, about like what @archvile recommended but without needing a computer.

  • Ensure both iCloud and Gmail are enabled in Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contact Accounts
  • Set Settings > Apps > Contacts > Default Account to iCloud
  • Open Contacts app; touch "Lists" then touch & hold "All Contacts" under Gmail
  • Select "Export"
  • "Select All Fields" then "Done"
  • "Save to Files", put 'em somewhere you'll be able to find in Files
  • Open Files, touch the file saved
  • Touch "Share" link bottom left
  • Touch "Contacts"
  • Turn off Gmail contacts in Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contact Accounts
QED!

If you have a Mac, open the Contact app, do File --> Import, and select your vCard file.

Or if have a Mac, add the Google account to the Mac/Contacts, toggle on Contacts, select all Google Contact, drag/drop to iCloud account.
