Greetings

In preparation to get a new iMac, but also to keep most of my files on an external HDD instead of an internal HDD, I'd like to move my iMovie files to an external HDD.

1) How do I do that? Do I need to do that from within iMovie or can I do that in the Finder?

2) What files will I need to move, just so I don't accidentally forget to move something?

Thanks
John

Does your version of iMovie organize its storage in a library(s)? If so you just copy or move the library to where you want it.

I'm not sure. I think it's the most updated one that came with Sierra.

It's really not so hard. ;) https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203049

If you are going to get a new computer soon, I suggest that you do a full backup of your existing Mac before changing anything though. Personally I prefer using Carbon Copy to make a clone, but Time Machine is another option. Then when you get the new Mac, just plug in the external disk with your backup and the Migration Assistant will automagically set it up just like your old one.

Thanks!

What's a little confusing to me is that in my Movies folder in my Home folder, I see four things:
  • iMovie Events
  • iMovie Library
  • iMovie Porjects
  • iMovie Theater
Do I move those also?

The folders iMovie Events and iMovie Projects, relate to the previous version of iMovie, iMovie11(v9). The folders iMovie Library and iMovie Theatre are for the current version, iMovie10.
