I'm moving from a 5 to a 6. Normally I do a full backup - old iPhone transfers apps to computer etc. Then restore - all apps are restored with data from old phone (such as viber/whatsapp messages, app information, game saves etc).

With this app thinning "upgrade" in iOS9 - how do I restore app data ? I just did a backup and restore but my new phone was downloading the app from app store rather than laptop....presumably without the app data ?!

Any help on this much appreciated.

If you're using iTunes, it works the same way iCloud does: download the app data to the device and pull the apps themselves from App Store.

So when I restore the backup in iTunes - iTunes will restore the app data, but download the app ?
My internet connection is rubbish - will have to leave it running all night. I hate apple sometimes - they don't think about 90% of the planet with poor connections!

It's because of App Slicing. To use it, the apps aren't completely built when being uploaded to iTunes. Instead, they're in a sort of "intermediate" state, and are built on demand with only the specific resources for the device in question. Can't do this with iTunes, since it would mean that an app could probably be disassembled easily (or at least easier than with a *.ipa file).

If you do a backup and restore via iTunes, you have to make sure all the apps are downloaded and updated on your computer (in your iTunes library). If you do a backup and restore via iCloud, all the apps will be downloaded directly to the device during the restore from backup process.

You can't do that now - that's the problem. What a nightmare!

To which part? The iTunes? I have auto app download turned on on iTunes. So whatever I download to my iPhone or iPad auto downloads to my iMac too. Problem solved.

I understand you want to preserve the data, but moving from a 5 to 6 deserves a fresh start, don't you think? ;)
