I've bought myself a nice 320GB hard drive to save some space on the withering iMac, but i only want to move the movies and TV shows. Is this possible at all and just leaving the music where they are?
    Many Thanks

cmd + drag the folders containing the files to your new external and leave to move ;)

I know i can do that, thanks lol.
But i mean if i copy the folders from the iTunes directory, the Movies and TV Shows folder, and i attempt to play something from that.
If itunes cant find it, can i change the source of these folders within itunes? Ideally i dont want to keep making it find a movie or tv show everytime i want to play something

But surely if i do that, if i want to add music, it wont add to the iTunes media folder?
Sorry if i seem dumb to this, but i just want to be able to have my music as it is on the hard drive, and movies and tv shows, on the external and itunes can just find it.
Also, i experimented with just moving a family guy ep to the desktop using finder, and itunes found it right away, i didnt have to do anything.
So, as your first post says....all i should do...is just delete the movies and tv shows on the hard drive, and somehow, lol, when i connect the external hard drive, it'll find it no problem?

Ok, well i'll surely give it a try then,
Just to make sure what im going to do!:
    1. Copy Movies and TV Shows folders to the External Hard Drive
    2. Go into Finder, delete the Movies and TV Shows Folder
    3. Empty Trash
    4. Go back into iTunes, play a random movie or TV Show, and it'll just play as it did before

    no...

you will have a step 5 in this which is:

Go through each and every TV Show and Movie and relink the iTunes file to the actual file in the new location.

I would highly recommend you NOT empty the trash, in case it does indeed get back to this step 5, you can just move all the files back to their original location (I suppose you can pull these files from the new drive too.)

I really don't know a good way to do this easily. iTunes allows you to easily move your entire library to a new folder/drive (using the consolidate Library function). Moving the entire library is easy. Might you be able to invest in a larger drive to hold your entire library? Is 320GB enough for the whole shebang?

Follow the instructions at the following site to the T and you will have no issues.

Thanks for the advice. Worked for me too, SuperDA. So happy to have space on my internal hard drive again! :D

BTW if you want to add new videos, just put them on the external drive and hold down the Alt key (I think it is Opt on a Mac but I'm not sure?) while you drag the file into iTunes from your external drive. iTunes will add the video to your library but instead of copying the file over to your computer drive, it will be linked to the external drive automatically.

Does this work with iTunes purchases?

Does this work with movies purchased from the iTunes store?

Yes but you probably need to move it, since it was likely downloaded to the internal drive.

Don't you have to uncheck the "Keep iTunes folder organized" box then move things over.

    I don't know for sure.
