Moving text cursors

I've switched from windows XP to a mac and have currently used the mac for almost 2 months now. One thing that bugs me is the speed of text cursors in OS X when controlling it with a keyboard. It's very slow compared to windows. Is there a way to control the speed or are you stuck with what you got?
