I am moving to Europe in a couple weeks and would to have a mobile phone to call back to the states. A couple people have said to just use the Skype App over Wi-Fi spots....Anyone think this would work? Or has anyone tried it out? I haven't purchased Skype minutes yet so I didn't want to do it until someone could confirm it as a viable solution.

It works perfectly for me. Skype is one of those 'must have' apps as all of my colleagues living and working in different countries use it so it's an easy way of keeping in touch with them as well as being able to make calls to regular numbers. You might also investigate getting an online Skype number which would enable people to call you from a regular phone or mobile as long as you have a WiFi connection. It also works over 3G but you'd then need a local data tariff.

I have Skype on my iPhone, as well as purchased Skype credit. It's worth it in my opinion. I use Skype credit for 2 things:
  1. Calling my parents quickly to tell them to go onto Skype (as we talk for a long time usually).
  2. Making phone calls when in no-reception areas (that have wifi). An example being the basement of a friend's house, who happens to live in a weak reception area to begin with.

I'm very impressed with the quality of the calls. As far as I can tell, they sound just like a normal telephone call to me. The nice thing with Skype credit is that it's a pay as you go sort of thing, so it should work great for what you need.
