Where are you getting these numbers? AT&T has three individual data packages; $20/300mb; $30/3GB; $50/5GB.

ATT is not selling it to non-residents. I know it firsthand. You not only can't buy data plan for iPhone, but they won't sell you even voice + text anymore. Buying voice / text was difficult in the past, and got impossible in the present.

Good information. I had no idea. But I guess I assumed the OP was moving tot he US. You know what they say about assumption though! :)

I'm only not sure why they're doing this. I've been told that iPhones are using way too much data. I said OK, I don't need data on my iPhone, just sell me voice + text. No, it still be using data. -- Even if data is turned off? -- Even if data is tuned off.

Sounds nuts for me, but obviously I don't know the kitchen.

That's nonsense. The phone doesn't use data if data is turned off. It literally can't. What's even more nonsense is that the telcos have the power to turn data off at ther level. But for some reason none of them do. "Smartphones require a data plan" for a completely arbitrary reason.

Yes, I thought so, but if the chief says no, it means no. "If I'll sell it to you, I'll be getting in grave troubles". Company policy etc.

I think I'm going to stay away from AT&T ;)

So far it looks like I'll start off with Tmobile with the unlimited calls/texts and 2gb (I have 1gb in Europe and I never go over the limit), it's full of Wifi hotspots in the US so I really doubt I'll go over 2gb

I love T-Mobile, they have really come a long way in the past year. Also don't worry about going over because it will just slow down to edge speed after that. You wont be charged for going over since T-Mobiles data is unlimited. This was the main reason i went with them. ATT and Verizon will charge you for going over on your data. Also Sprint just sucks.

When I was in Orlando the coverage with T-Mobile was fine so I'm sure you'll be okay.
Go to airportal.de to see a map of T-Mobiles reframed 1900 4G, to see if you'll have 4G on your non-AWS iPhone.

thanks for all the answers...

I'll be located in Florida, near St.Augustine.

I'll be staying for quite a long time (more than a year)...

According to TMobiles coverage checker, I should have very good coverage for 3G/4G, but since I know from personal experience that they don't have 3G yet in the area, it's important that I have real 4G if I go with them, otherwise I would go straight to Edge...

Alternatively to the Tmobile unlimited, would the 2GB internet addon be 2gb 4G data? or is there an initial allowance and then the rest is 2G?

While if I went with AT&T, it seems that the unlimited talk is $70+$20 for messages and $50 for Unlimited data!!!!! Someones been smoking too much crack  How has there not been a rebellion in the US yet :p

I don't want to spend more than 50-60 ideally, so I think best option is Tmobile, either initially seeing if 2gb is enough since there is wifi everywhere in the US, and eventually moving up to unlimited data if needed.

I would go with AT&T. I am from Florida and my sister lives in St Augustine so I know service is great. You won't be able to get unlimited data but you could do nation 450 mins with unlimited messaging which gives you free mobile to any mobile and then I would recommend the 3gb data plan. It comes out to 89.99 before taxes. Unless you want to have the iPad on the plan too. Then you could do one of their mobile share plans.

Look into these virtual mobile networks. They're pretty cheap and piggy back off of big carriers spectrum. Look into H20

I'm surprised no one has mentioned solavei

50 dollars for unlimited everything (throttle you at 5GB). They use TMobile towers. I've been using it for roughly a month with my Google Nexus 4.

They even support nanosims for the iPhone 5
