Hi everyone, I'm moving from the States to Austria with my Wii in a few weeks. The Wii is region locked, isn't it? So that I can't buy new games while I'm there.

Is there any legal way around this, so I can purchase the games there? It's annoying that a machine I bought won't work with the exact same material in another country when I legally bought it and will be paying for all future games.

Welcome to the stupid world all of this copyright protection creates.

I lived in Thailand (now Singapore), but they sell Japanese Wii's here. So if I bought one of those I could only download Japanese VC games. Stupid. So I bought a US version when I was home. Only now games are like 100 USD (and for most Wii games far from worth even 50 normally).

I paid and put a chip to region free (also had some other issues with backups, but I know that gets everyone in a fervor over here) in and have to use a voltage converter.

It's so stupid. The little DS manages around all of this (dual voltage, region unlocked, etc). I mean the Wii is a console, but it's also super small and would be easy to travel with as well...

The original Sony PSP was region locked as well. I went to Japan with some games and tried to use a colleagues local games and couldn't... Just absurd.

I looked into unlocking my Wii at one point to buy some Japanese games but never did it. HomeBreWare was one option ($29)...

Wii sucks for being region locked. It's probably the main reason I don't play with it that much. It wouldn't be so bad if the legitimate ways of getting round the region thing worked, but with the constant wii updates breaking things like FREELOADER then it just plain sucks.

When I compare to how many games I bought on my gamecube (albeit with FREELOADER GC) the wii pales so far into comparison it's just not funny. However lets be honest there's hardly a slew of worthwhile titles to import anyway :D

But yeah.. Wii this generation sucks for importers. PS3 rocks importing, and the 360 isn't half bad either.

I use Gecko OS and the Homebrew Channel to play my Jap games. Just can't update to sm3.4 to my knowledge.
