I bought Draytek 2830n router which offers both 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz. When running on 2.4Ghz AirRadar and iStumbler show 65% signal, but when I change to 5.8Ghz signal immediately drops almost by half to 35%.

So question, is Airport N that comes with MP 5.8Ghz compatible? Router is less than half meter in clear range with Mac Pro, so I would rather expect signal close to 100% on both frequencies.

I checked on my wife's Mac Mini and it's the same poor signal.

That looks to be a cheap or free DSL modem given to you by your internet provider? It's entirely possible it's just a piece of crap and you need a better router.

I got a free router built in with my FIOS modem, but it's a piece of crap. I hooked up an Airport Extreme to it and use that instead.

Draytek is considered Rolls Royce in routers :) They are rather on expensive side.

When I place it next to Mac Pro, it gets full 300 Mbps but if the router is just next room 10m away, on 2.4Ghz it jumps between 20-50, while on 5.8Ghz it won't even find a network.

Mac Mini seems a bit better but as I was upgrading from B/G, I supposed N will blown me away, both with extended range and strong signal but it failed to impress.
