your money, your call ... but I can't see how a difference from 20 to 40 fps (if any) in an opening window can change your workflow.
I honestly think it's just a "fixation" ;)

Probably!! I'm fussy like that. I probably will wait until the current generation of cards come down a bit in cost. On a tight budget at the moment. It's likely 10.6.3 will help... I hope so:)

Not really. GTX285 is a faster card than 4870. So if you are purely interested in OpenGL performance you should go with Nvidia. But, again, no powermizer on ATI, so with ATI finder will seem more responsive.

not fair bringing up the gtx285, we were talking about the gt8800 :)

Yes, i am very happy with the 4870, works well in all aspects. I had planned on getting a game that would stress it a bit, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe i'll pick up Crysis over the weekend.

The thing is, finder performance, without that powermizer issue, shouldn't be any different between 8800 and 4870. Quartz does not need tons of GPU power to work flawlessly. My 8800 was as smooth on Finder as GTX285 as long as powermizer isn't active.

I'm back! I installed Leopard over the weekend. Leopard's GUI is like lightning compared, absolutely night and day difference. It's definitely this Powerizer GPU issue, I've logged my dissatisfaction with Apple, not that that will make any difference!!!

No, it's not just powermizer. There's a way to turn powermizer off, even then Leapord GUI is way faster than SL. It's about finder being rewritten in cocoa most probably. Not only about Quartz.

If you want to turn off powermizer, just open itunes visualizer in the background.
