I couldn't get the file to work ( well it started to download but at a slow rate...maybe my internet service is screwed up again) but I have had a very bad experience canceling AOL. I was hung up on twice when I insisted the account be closed. It took a few hours to accomplish this. They are absolutely ferocious when it comes to keeping their customers.

Why fake?
I'm not saying it is, but one (well, two) things that did make me think it might be:

1) Vincent Ferrari. Nice name, could be real, but wow...that's a name lol

2) Keeping the name in mind, it's hard to imagine an AOL employee such as the one in the MP3 not needing to be told, or even asking for, a spelling for that name.

So he just happened to be recording this conversation? Which could be illegal, depending on where he lives?

I hope it is real.

But then, surely if that was happening you'd just ask to speak to the guy's manager?

When I've phoned to cancel stuff and they've not done it within a minute or two I ask to be put through to a supervisor.

This was actually pretty much exactly how it was for me when I cancelled an AOL account. Keep telling me how much I used the account and tried to keep me on the phone for almost an hour and all sorts of other annoying tactics.

What a smarmy jerk. I've worked in a customer service call center before, and find it troubling that he'd argue with the customer like that. Who cares if he's been using his service or not? Just close the damn account and move on.

When you cancel an account on AOL, you're not talking to a "customer service" person, you're talking to a sales person. They've been trained in high-pressure tactics to keep you from cancelling your account. I'm sure they get a bonus for convincing someone to not cancel (or to hang up out of frustration).

There's no one at AOL whose job is to *help* people cancel their accounts. If you go into it with that in mind, it will be much less frustrating.

There's no way to know whether this recording is a fake or not... but there's no doubt that it is an accurate representation of what happens when you call to cancel your AOL account. Believe me, I've been there.

Agreed.

I had painful issues with cancelling my free AOL trial period a couple of years ago...and they wonder why people are leaving them in droves.

We once cancelled an AOL account, only to find that they kept charging us. They (eventually) refunded the money they had stolen after another couple of months of arguing.

1) I know several people with the last name Ferrari

2) Maybe the guy was a car buff and knew how to spell Ferrari?

Or, perhaps they have a caller ID system like pizza delivery places and automatically got the info based on the phone number and they wanted the name for verification?

This reminds me of the time when my father cancelled an AOL account. The AOL guy tried to sell him on all the great features of AOL...never mind that "exclusive features" were for the Windows version only.

wow. that is hillarious. If this is real, and I recorded this- I would walk right up to AOL's headquarters and let them listen to it.

I too cancelled AOL years ago and had a similar experience.

A faithful representation of the hell of trying to dump this company.

AOL is ridiculous. Online is one word, not two. So it should either be AO or AMRCAOL or USAOL :).

I loved when john says "Is there a problem with the software"
hmmm.... AOL quite possibly is the most annoying program in the world.

This is totally legit, trust me... I had the EXACT same experience when trying to cancel an account with AOL and it wasn't even a net access account, it was an add-on account for my broadband. Anyhow I didn't have the patience that this guy had and called back 3 seperate times until I flew off the handle and started cursing like no ones business. The lady finally had enough and cancelled my account.

AOL is the most corrupt, crude, and poorly run company on the planet. I live about 30 mins away from the AOL HQ here in VA and on numerous occasions I've thought about driving by and throwing molotov coctails threw a few of the call-center windows....

I HATE AOL!!!!!!!!

that made my day. i wish i could record phone calls at will. i tried to cancel my rogers tv and phone because i had moved and it took over an hour. at the end i asked the 10th person i was tranferred to falt out, "so is my account gone yet?" because i was lost in all the sales talk and transfers.

i do enjoy phone surveys, and i actaully lookk forward to them. my last one was about westjet, air canada and canned fruit. no lie.

I've had somewhat similar experiences; perhaps he's recording it because he attempted to cancel the account before and hung up in frustration.

Oddly, though, the web page that this is hosted on the man goes by the name "Frank Barrett." Oh well.

It's like trying to escape from a sinking ship and asking the water if you can leave.

I have had to cancel an account with AOL before as well. While not nearly that bad, it was pretty damn bad none the less.

Great call, and I raise this thread a pissed off History Channel viewer. (linked from boingboing.net)

Here. NSFW:Lang

Edit: sorry for the lack of warning.
