Mp4 video files not playing

I can play mp4s fine in iTunes but they won't copy to my iPhone... Or iPod for that matter. I have one video file bought from iTunes that plays fine on everything. The files that won't play are copies from DVDs I own. Any suggestions on how to solve this?

You need to re-encode the videos so that iPhone can read them properly, I recommend using HandBrake as it has defined presets for devices like iPhone 3GS.
