Just to add a data point...I am running HS 10.13.6 on my MP5,1 with a MVC flashed PC Gigabyte R9 280X graphics card. I ran the Mojave DP9 installer only to update to the new BootROM: 138.0.0.0. Installed w/o a hitch and didn't have to chnage out the 280X for the 5770 graphics card. Thanks, @tsialex, for your enlightening research.

I can update through System Preferences > Install updates on my apfs ssd on an unsupported mac but on my supported system (cMP 5,1 with Sapphire Radeon RX 580 8GB) trying to update I get the following screen.

WTF???
Pressing the restart is also interesting - even though I do not have a apple graphics card I get a kind of boot selection screen? might this be used by someone with more skills than I have to emulate a boot selection screen for non apple cards? - at least until apple fixes this.

This is a standard Startup Disk selector presented by the OS.
My guess is this was presented before the OS installer fully shutdown. There are a other possibilities, bu less likely ones.

Only now I had time to install 18A377a. Let's see if the new build changed anything…

I want to publicly thank @tsialex for fixing my Mac Pro's BootROM. I wasn't able to use iCloud/Messages/FaceTime. But after flashing his redone rom everything is working again!.
Download the full installer from the Mac App Store (move or delete any previous version of macOS High Sierra that might be in your Applications folder).
The installer will start after it has downloaded - follow the instructions:
The installer will shut your Mac down.
Hold down the power button until you see the light flashing or you hear the long tone.
Wait for it to update the firmware.
On the next restart it will start the installer up again - just Quit unless you want to re-install your OS again.

BootROM 138.0.0.0.0, like the thread title says, it's from Mojave betas.

Did you full upgrade your macOS install or just the BootROM? If you just upgrade your BootROM, no one reported sound problems.
If you installed PB1 (18A314k) from June 26, over your High Sierra installation, the sound did not work with that early version, but the current one is PB8 (18A377a), released Monday. Btw, BootROM 138.0.0.0.0 was released with PB6 (18A365a).
We'll try to help you with any issues you have, but you have to be more specific. Are you saying that after the update, you have no sound from your computer, and that in the preferences pane, there is no choice for audio out? I literally had to read what you wrote five or six times to figure it out.
Please post screenshots from SystemInformation > Hardware Overview and System Information > Audio.
Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but it looks like only AMD GPUs get the 2.5 to 5 GT/sec adjustment in 138.
I just upgraded a machine using a Sapphire RX380 Nitro to 0138 and its card went from reporting 2.5 to 5 GT in System Info.
I upgraded another running a generic GTX 770 and it's still negotiating at 2.5..

Well, that's hardly surprising. Apple deals exclusively with AMD GPUs these days; they have no reason to enable higher functionality on what is essentially competing hardware. It seems my decision to switch from nVidia to AMD was a wise choice. Now if only we can get an EFI ROM to flash it with...
Oddly enough, another machine running 0138 and an EFI'd GTX 680 has it negotiating at 5 GT/sec, so maybe with NVidias both conditions must be met to get 5 GT/sec (EFI ROM, 0138)
I installed 0138 firmware on my 4,1->5,1 with a MVC-flashed 980 and the system info still reports 2.5.
