I have a rMBP, but I'm always hesitant to use it directly on my lap because it runs a bit hot. Do the new MBAs run cooler? If you work with one on your lap, can you feel any heat?

It depends on what you're using it for. Just got mine yesterday and did some couch surfing, had skype open, and was downloading software updates. No heat whatsoever, and did not hear the fans.

As I have other computers to do the more complicated stuff on, I would only use the MBA for basic tasks - web browsing, maybe document editing etc.

Yeah you won't experience any heat. i use it as my primary (and only) computer and it runs fine connected to a 23" 1080p monitor. The only time it gets hot is when I bring out COD 4, but that's expected and you said you wouldn't be using it for that.

The 2013 MBA is hands down the quietest and the coolest computer I've ever owned. It's simply incredible how quiet this thing is. I've run video n multiple monitors, multiple Flash video streams, etc. Still have not heard the fan. The bottom has gotten warm occasionally (with most of the heat emanating from the upper left near the Mag Safe 2 port), but nothing near the rMBP.
