My MBP is using the intel iris as main display. I noticed this when I was looking at my "about this mac" window. I remember when I first purchased my pro it used my Nvidia card. Why is it using Intel Iris now? Does Yosemite regulate it? Work load and what apps/programs you're using and switch it on and off?

It always uses the Integrated Display (Iris) unless there is an app/program/video/etc. that demands/requires the Discrete GPU to kick in.

It switches seamlessly between graphics cards depending on graphical power demand.

Macs with dual graphics have behaved this way since 2011.
