I have a JVC camera that create files in MPEG-2. I was able to play them using VLC but to use iMovie I have to have MPEG-2 encoder as iMovie seems to operate in a Quicktime environment...
It's fine but it just cost money which I dont know why since you can do that in Windows..!!
I was wondering if anyone knows a software or anything out there that can resolve this issue and it's "green" free ;)

Try ffmpegX to convert your MPEG-2 movie into dv, which should be the native editing format for iMovie. If you have issues with sound, you may have to look into mux/demux options.
