News.com's RumorMill hints at MPEG-4 support finally arriving at the Quicktime Live conference:

"One of the key announcements will be that QuickTime 5.1 will support MPEG-4," said our Skinformant. "Looks like they'll have to rely on open standards to finally realize the promise of QuickTime Interactive."

Hmm.... Quicktime 5.1? What happened to Quicktime 6.0?

Look at the bright side. If they're calling it 5.1 and not 6, at least we won't have to pay for new QT Pro keys!

I still want to know why MPEG-1 support is so lousy in QT. And still no MPEG-2. Grrrrrr.

wow, who would have expected that 5.1 comment. i guess leaping from 5 to 6 is a bit extreme, but then again i guess we were all hoping for an extreme change. we assumed new features (mpeg4) and a new interface (i love the current one but change is always fun). well as long as we get mpeg4 and improved osx performance i suppose i will be happy, but im surprised with so much pointing to an update that apple hasnt posted a beta release as we are used to. tell me those of you who have memories greater than my own, did apple release betas before 4?

When will we see DivX support in QT??

Is Apple going to release a DivX codec for QT, all my wintel "friends" are laughing at the fact that I have to use third-party products to extract the mp3 and play it at the same time as the movie etc. grrrr...

There's like a quicktime mac os x divx plugin at the divx website... DivX is just MPEG-4 on crack.. I don't see the whole big deal about DivX, anyways. Oh boy, download full length divx anime porn movies and watch them in a tiny square! fun!

...

....And burn them down on VCD... Quite fun actually.. I've already seen Monsters, Inc. 4 times and it has premiere today in my country...

So.... Thats why!

Actually - what you described is how it is without Divx/MPEG4... download a postage stamp sized movie.

With a good DivX, you can download a full-rez movie... 640x480 or similar, and watch it on your tv

MPEG-4 based on QuickTime

A few years ago I was at Philips, where some experts were working on MPEG 4, and it turned out that MPEG 4 was based on the ideas behind QuickTime. THerefore I think it's not surprising that QuickTime will support MPEG4.

DivX is some rip of of MPEG 4 by MS. It is does not comply to MPEG4. (I think they left out stuff.)

Actually, DiVX is an outdated varient of a scaled down reverse engeneered Beta codec varient of MPEG4 that MS was working on. since the DiVX project was started all the tech that it was based on has progressed and DiVX has become more fregmented. If anything the failures of DiVX look like a laundry list of why you need official standerds and unified code in open source or video Codecs.

More to the point, official MPEG4 encoding is a better option than DiVX but if people won't pay for the media they are pirating they won't pay for the proper Codec and encoder either so. . .

fkin priates

.....ohh i can watch Monsters Inc ...look at me..

scrappers like you have no comprehension of the sweat commitment and dedication that goes into crafting something as beautiful as a PIXAR movie...

you havent even got the respect to pay to see it at the cinema...

you claim to love it.. and you crap on the people who make it...

you make me sick

Isn't the problem with DivX, the AVI codec currently used in Quicktime? If Apple just updates the codec then DivX would work fine. BTW, this isn't just for DivX but for all current AVIs....it's a pain if you work in multimedia and need to use AVI files.

divx is a cracked format of microsoft's mpeg 4 codec, that's right, you are all waiting for something made by them, divx, if that's the mpeg 4 codec you want, well, quicktime has a mp3 problem, which is usually what people who encode in divx format use because then the audio is small and you can burn the video to cd, now divx can be in any size, any resolution depending on bitrate. lower the bitrate, lower the size, so if i want to rip a dvd, you can still have it full rez wide screen, but you need to encode and drop bitrate using a bitrate calculator, now some people go and pay a huge price to watch things in the theatres, sadly, i'm one of them, but i don't like paying so much everytime, and sometimes i just feel like watching it at home, so i will download it, mac has no svcd support, sad, and it has issues with many mpegs, this i hope this is all changed in qt 6 or 5.1, because really it sucks not being able to just take any video format, divx or otherwise, and play it on a mac at good speed and performance, it's not much to ask considering every other os can do it. qt needs a svcd support and full, not just microsoft mpeg4, but all mpeg 4 codecs.

So it sounds like pretty much every use for the Divx everyone knows and loves is usually for an illegal purpouse? I'm sure Apple knows this, and to stay out of trouble with the MPAA they'll probably exclude "Divx" from QT 5.1 or 6, but will include true MPEG-4 that can be used for legal reasons, like a replacement to current quicktime movie encoding.

that's a major reason why apple doesn't release a "divx" codec, b/c it is hacked and is not used with good intentions, microsoft, well, they never give a s@#$, so they let people screw up anything they want. apple knows this and they will think of something that will make us all happy

Divx was a hacked codec...but developement on a fresh (commercial) version started with backward compatability with the "hacked" codec..
