MPEG files on the iPhone?

I have a bunch of .MPEG's I want to copy on to my iPhone to watch. Is this possible?

Even though Apple doesn't state .mpg as supported, I've played .mpg's in the mobile Safari before. It would seem likely then that when you copy them to iTunes, it should transfer over and play fine on the phone.
