What are the best settings to use when importing so that the file will work on a PC which doesn't have many codecs. I just want to import a bit of a movie and give it to a kid to chop up in moviemaker without them having to download codecs etc...'

Mpeg-1.

Save as MPEG-1. Any computer running Windows 95 or later can play it. Although if you specifically want to edit the movie, your best bet is raw DV. It'll be huge, but it's the best format for editing in an unknown editing program.
