Mpg conversion software?

For some reason my new iMac won't play all my mpg files as it doesn't recognize them as movie files. I presume I need to convert them to mp4 or some other file type. Is there a good free/shareware/cheap program out there that won't cut my files in half or add a watermark?

Try downloading Perian. If that doesn't help you may need to convert the files. VisualHub will convert them but it's not freeware. Good program though if you end up needing to do it a lot and at $20ish it's not too bad.
