I'll try not to hijack this thread. But if you have a chance try out Movist it's available in the Mac App Store is a really great movie player and I have not used anything else after switching to it.

After being a died in the wool MPlayerX and Mplayer OS X extended user for years. It was five dollars well spent...

I'll preface this by saying I have an old computer. 2007 mbp.

I find on some videos that mplayerx gets choppy where vlc plays the file perfectly. I know vlc uses the CPU. I'm wondering if mplayerx uses the GPU instead? Or are the codecs less efficient?
 
Mplayer X works just fine on OS X Mavericks for me. No workarounds required: Download and run.

Switched over to movist and now I can't switch back, the FF/RW speed is to good!
