Poor 3G Battery Life - Suddenly...

So nobody else is having issue with exchange draining their battery in 5 hours or less?

hmmm...

Yes!! My 3G is almost one year old (in Sept. '09) and suddenly the battery won't hold a charge for longer than maybe 5 hours total WITHOUT using it!! I charged it overnight one night and unplugged it at 0730 and by noon it was drained - again with VERY LITTLE usage.

Called Apple - local store looked at it - didn't much and esily EXCHANGED it for a "new" one (they have LOTS of phones boxed and ready - but not in the "ne for sale" boxes - does this indicate they have MANY they are "exchanging" to current owners??

Well, now I have the "new one" and I have almost a worse problem. 3/4 of the battery is drained in 6 hours and I have had only one tel. call and checked emails once.

Anyone else having this problem? Could it be the 3.0 upgrade?? or?? I don't want to have to go back to the store - even though they were very nice about it - it seemed like they kind of expected it??

P.S. My son (who bought his 3G the same day last year - had a very similar battery drain + one other problem and they did a "new" exchange for him a few days ago...

Built-in obsolescence on Apple's part?? I hate to think so but WHAT is going wrong??:(

This happens to my Exchange account every now and then. My solution so far: Delete the Exchange account from your iPhone, reboot (optional), then add the account again. This 'fixes' it for me. I think the Exchange account gets corrupted somehow (very technical, I know)...but hey, works every time.

Hope that helps you.

Thanks IP2 I'll give that a shot. Heres the latest result:

Location service off, bt off, no Apps but the defaults, Safari windows all closed, restarted phone, enabled MS Exchange and unplugged from the charger:

I am recharging now. I will run another "control" with Exchange deleted after it recharges. then I will try with "fetch" instead of "push"

I have noticed that it is sending a decent amount of data, I think 10 mb in the past 6 hours. I also noticed that the usage and standby times are incorrect, I should only show a total of about 45 min of usage

This is what I expect to see with a properly functioning battery and limited services. Now with Exchange enabled, bt on, and location on, why is it unreasonable to expect 50% of this?

Same problem here....it seems like it didn't start until after the 3.1 update for me though...I've turned off push for my exchange account and I have doubled or tripled my battery life.

BUT...i shouldn't have to turn off push for the phone to last 1 day!

I hope they fix this soon.

Exchange connectivity lost --> dead battery

Our corporate Excahnge server has been down for a few days (yes, it's terrible). Now everyone with an iPhone has it heating up and draining the battery. My theory is that it goes crazy trying to reconnect and builds up a bunch of threads, and abuses the networking connection, which drains battery. I believe it does involve some thread CF (cluster f**k) because even if you go into "airplane mode" it stays hot for a really long time -- you really need to cycle it in "airplane mode". ...and of course in "airplane mode" you have a brick and not a telephone.

Unfortunately, deleting the account is pretty scary. There is a message that all the contacts and calendar events will be deleted too. Since the Exchange server is still down (yes, it's really terrible), that would mean that all I'd have was a phone -- not much better than a brick, since being a telephone is not what the iPhone excels at.

I logged a bug with Apple, but who knows?

Do you guys have trouble with intermittent loss of Exchange connectivity? It could be that only a short interruption can cause run-away threads that suck down battery...

I'm wondering if this has been my problem lately. Usually I can have my 3GS last all day with several mail accounts being pushed and fetched, bluetooth always on, wifi on occasionally, etc... Unplugging it around 7:00am, it would easily last until 11:00pm or so.

However, the past couple of days my battery life has been abysmal, being at 20% by noon. It is jailbroken, but nothing has changed in months and suddenly a couple of days ago the battery would be nearly be dead after only a few hours. I could just about watch the battery counter decrease every minute or so.

I just deleted my Exchange account and added it again. I'm hoping this might fix it. Else, I'll try to restore it and bring it back to a non-jail-broken state, though I have my doubts this will solve anything.

I haven't had any problems with my 3GS until now. Not sure what's up.
