After upgrading from 10.12 to 10.13 on my 2012 iMac, MS Office 11 started to quit unexpectedly. The problem remains persistently. There were no problems before the upgrade. To resolve this issue, I am thinking of either downgrade the OS back to 10.12 or upgrade MS Office to 16. My questions are:
(1) How to do the Mac OS downgrade?
(2) What if MS Office 16 also has the same problem with Mac OS 10.13?

Appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

Have you updated Office 11 to latest version?

AFAIK Office 2011 is not officially supported on 10.13, while 2016 is. So 2016 should work. I am not running 10.13 yet myself, so cannot give any personal experience.

That said, I don't like 2016 much and the other day excel 2016 kept crashing when adding a trendline on a big-dataset, while 2011 worked flawless.

Yes, it was updated to final or latest version. Thanks! Anyone running MS Office 2016?

Office 2011 running fine here with High Sierra 10.13.1. Although Microsoft has stopped issuing updates for 2011 it still works and will likely coninue to work until Apple restricts macOS to 64 bit apps only. That will probably be sometime late next year when a new release of macOS goes public.

I have Office 2016 but have not installed it. Office 2016 in my opinion is typical MS bloatware and many times larger than 2011 without really offering any more function. MS is already working on Office 2018 or 2019 which is supposed to be an improvement. But with MS, who knows when that will be released.

Can you state the version? The latest and last update is V 14.7.7. I have both Office 2011 and Office 2016 installed. No issues with either.

Now back to my first question: How to downgrade Mac OS from 10.13 to 10.12. Anyone?

It is version 14.7.7 (170905).

Thanks for the link! I will try to downgrade to 10.12 for the time being. In the mean time if any one has new or different ideas, please let me know! Thanks everyone!

Did you try reinstalling Office 2011? That would be easier than downgrading to Sierra which will probably require a wipe of your hard drive. Also Sierra in no longer available from the MAS which means you'll need to have a copy on hand or a Sierra installer on a flash drive.

I had 2016 on my Air when I upgraded to High Sierra - the Suite was actually part of a Office 365 subscription I was given when I worked on a contract for a company. But I am no longer there and the I will not pay for a subscription to keep a WP app running. So I uninstalled it and dusted off my 'old' 2011 version and reinstalled it, days before Microsoft pulled support from it. It does run on High Sierra - though it is slow to open sometimes and saving files can cause a brief beachball moment - but my Air is only 4 GB, so I'm giving it a little slack.
When the next proposed local version of Office comes out (apparently 2019), I'll look at it - assuming I still have a Mac (and neither Microsoft or Apple pricing themselves out of any sort of reasonable consideration), but if Apple disables my 2011's use by 'upgrades', I'll look at the free alternatives, like LibreOffice. Not Pages, which is Apple's version of Microsoft's old Works program.

My situation is a bit similar to yours that 2011 worked well under 10.13 until closing a file and then 2011 quit unexpectedly but file was saved. It was annoying using 2011 under 10.13. Can you be certain that 2016 worked under 10.13 ?

I don’t know if 2011 were reinstalled could any updates still be available from MS ? Fortunately I have a copy of Sierra installer on a flush drive and also a carbon copy of my main HD partition under Sierra when upgraded to High Sierra. My 1 TB HD was partitioned 3 ways. So all I need to do is to erase the HD partition under High Sierra.

Neither will I, and you don't have to. My post from another thread:

I paid $56.99 for the Home and Business edition. Thought that was a GREAT deal. It's legitimate, the license goes to Microsoft and you can download directly from Microsoft. However I chose to download the program first and apply the license once installed. I bought my license here:

BTW, MS announced Office 2019 this morning. Coming out in late 2018.

For anyone who is active duty military or retired military, AAFES (Army Air Force Exchange System) has a special military thank you edition of Office 365 on sale for $29.95 (subscription). It's the Home Edition but it allows installation on 5 Macs or PCs, Tablets, Phones, etc. That's the best price I have found for the suite.

Before I was going to reinstall Office 2011, OS 10.13.2 became available and I went ahead upgrading from 10.13.1 to 10.13.2. It turned out that under 10.13.2 Office 2011 works very well and my problem was solved.

Office 2016 got rid of two features I had used. Notebook mode in Word and Automator actions are now gone. I used automator to convert legacy Powerpoint to the new Powerpoint format for many files with a single click for example.

I am using Excel mainly. For the time being, I will stay with Office 2011 and wait for post Office 2016 version (Office 2019 maybe)

The current version of Office 2016 is 15.41
You can buy a perpetual (non-subscription) license.
I also have a system with Office 2011. The latest version is 14.7.7. It seems to work fine under 10.13.2, though I don't exercise it as much as I do the newer version.

Same situation here... Office 2011 v.14.7.7 is working well with 10.13.2 . I'll be looking at Office 2019 for Mac when it is scheduled to be released supposedly in 2018.

^^^^I've switched to Office 2016 due to Office 2011 not being supported anymore. But occasionally I still use Office 2011 with 10.13 and APFS without issue.
