Tried to install MS Office 365 on a M1 MacMini a couple of days ago and ran into terrible problems. After countless MS support sessions and a remote session that went on for hours this is what happened: A fresh download & install of the latest O365 versions (16.44) worked without any error message, but the license could not be activated permanently and thus, the apps were not usable. This is the solution: I had to go back to O365 version 16.40, activate the apps and upgrade from there.

YMMV.

I downloaded and installed the office apps from O365 subscription on my M1 base Mini earlier today. They have all been updated for Apple Silicon, which is only available on Big Sur.

The install was seamless. It did, however, force me to re-setup my OneDrive accounts for some reason. After the install a message popped up saying I was running an old version of OneDrive (which I originally installed from the App Store). So I installed the version suggested after the O365 install (thinking maybe it was a Apple Silicon release).

After the install, I realized that it was in fact the same version number as the one in the App Store, and was still an Intel Application. The OneDrive application, however, is now handled by the MS updater instead of the App Store update, and now offers the option of choosing the Beta channel in addition to the regular release channel.

Installed flawless from me on the AppStore and signed in with my 356 account. No issues

I downloaded the set of office apps from the App Store onto my M1 MBA - Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Onedrive. No issues so far over a week's worth of use. This is for Office 365.

Mine was migrated from a 2019 Macbook Pro using Migration Assistant to the M1 Mini.

The program required that I log back into my MS subscription account and all the Office apps were activated.

Pretty easy...

You should update all your apps to the current version so they'll run native. You need to be on 16.44 or later.
