Is there any good MS publisher alternative for Macbooks? Ideally something to create calendars easily. Would be nice if I could open my MS publisher files but imagine that isn't possible.

Thanks!

Have a look at Swift Publisher by Belight Software. Don't expect it to compete feature for feature with MS Publisher or InDesign, but for the majority of things nonprofessional or small business users do, like creating calendars, etc. its very comprehensive. Version 4 was just released and is on sale for $14.99 until September 30, 2015 in the Mac App Store. Download their free trial and take it for a test drive.

In Word 2011 you can select View Publishing layout and it starts to act like a completely other program. I believe it is ment to be Publisher on Mac, though I am not expert on this.

nb. Yet another feature gone in Word 2016.

If you want a little more powerful program, try iCalamus. I moved from Pages 4 to this about seven months ago. While I had a few problems, the developer was very courteous and helpful iCalamus forums. It is definitely higher end than Swift, but nowhere in the cost category of InDesign. I recommend it.
