MS Word for Mac problem

When I highlight a section of text, to prepare to delete it, when I hit the delete key the highlighting disappears, and the cursor returns to the beginning (left side of left-most word) of the highlighted section. Is these some command I hit to change the behaviour of this process??

Any help is appreciated...

Edit: Found something interesting.. if I push the function key with the delete key, the highlighted text disappears like it should.....

Sorry can't help other than I copied this post into MS word for mac (2004)
I highlighted many different sections at different times.... all deleted as it should. Had no issues... good luck!

Yeah, me too. Not sure what's going on there!
