For what it's worth, according to AppleInsider, Microsoft is considering webcam support for MSN Messenger 5 5 for Mac.
5.5? Messenger for Mac is only at 4 right now ... how long will it take to get to 5.5

5.5 won't happen anytime soon. Microsoft is still debating internally when to release v5 for Mac and what features to include in it.

BTW, MSN Messenger for Windows has reached V6.2, and there's a beta of V7 available too.

Precisely. I understand why iChat doesn't support MSN and why M$ hasn't implemented video capabilities into Messenger for Mac. What I don't understand is why there are no third party Mac apps similar to Trillian.

iChat supports one IM network (at least for now), For Apple to add others they would have to work out agreements with Yahoo and MSN that the third party IM applications don't have to.

Because the giant moves slowly. Maybe someone is trying to make sure the Mac MSN client isn't as good as the Winblows one. Or maybe they just don't have a person to do it yet?

You mean like Adium or iFire? (Among several others.) You should do some research on Apple's download site in the email & chat section.

No, I mean like Trillian. I'm well aware of Adium and iFire, but they don't support video conferencing, which, as I'm sure you're aware, is the topic of this thread.

Actually it's been about IM clients in general as well as video conferencing.
