Ok, so, I have a small dilemma that I would love some advice on. I am torn between buying the new updated iMac or getting one of the older models. The only way that I can afford it right now is by going through Nebraska Furniture Mart because I have a $600 gift card for the place. As far as I can tell the only differences between the old imac models & the newly updated ones are listed below:

    Old: 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, NFM price = $1299
    vs.
    New: 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM, NFM price = $1499

So it comes down to a $200 difference for me, which one is the better deal? Thoughts?

Ok, I guess it should have said 2.66, I went back & corrected it.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on the difference between the two machines & the $200 difference?

I'm still not sure what you're talking about. The now-just-became-previous generation of Imacs offered 2.0, 2.4 and 2.8.

In any event, I don't think you'll see any real-world difference in the 0.2+Ghz difference. To get the most speed from your Mac you'll need to spend an extra $100 to upgrade to 4GB. So I would say save the $200, get the 2.4, and upgrade to 4GB.

The bottom line is what you're going to use the Mac for, and how important that $200 is to you. If you want to save some more money and lose little if any performance check out Apple's refurbished Imacs. Buyers of the refurbished machines rave about them.

Have you thought about getting the new 2.4 model that would save you even more.

I just ordered a refurbed 24"/2.8Ghz. Up until Monday, it was top of the range. Now it's $600 cheaper than the new top of the range. I didn't need the high-end graphics card, the chip is plenty fast and it has a bigger hard drive than the new 2.8GHz model.
